Word out of Chicago is that quarterback Jim Miller was released primarily because of his locker-room popularity.

The concern is that teammates would not have respected or embraced the new starter if Miller were still on the team.

Of course, at the time Miller was released, the Bears hadn't signed a new signal-caller. The fact that Chicago ultimately added the thin-skinned and mercurial Kordell Stewart highlights the importance ensuring that there will be unity regarding Kordell's status as the leader of the offense.

Then again, unless the Bears plan to carry only one quarterback, there's always a chance that the players will look to the backup, if the No. 1 guy plays like No. 2. And if anyone can do that, it's Kordell.
