This is a very comprehensive and excellent look at the '08 FA's. It echoes some of my thoughts for a couple individuals that I advocate Buffalo taking a hard look at, namely Green Bay's DT Corey Williams and Seattle's second wideout D.J. Hackett. But it either promotes or repudiates all the pending FA's players by virtue of a star system (5 is the highest; 0 is obviously the lowest). Anyway, I'm going to highlight a few of their comments but provide all the links, too (you can access the links to all the positions with any of these links I'm providing).

WR's:

3. D.J. Hackett, Seahawks. Age: 27 ***

I marked D.J. Hackett as a fantasy sleeper. Unfortunately, he only played four full games. In those contests, however, he had 384 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Not too shabby.

DT's:

2. Corey Williams, Packers. Age: 28 ****

The Packers are not expected to re-sign Corey Williams, as they have tons of quality defensive tackles on their roster and cannot afford to keep him. Given that Albert Haynesworth will likely remain a Titan, Williams will be the top defensive tackle on the market.

CB's:

Note: my comment below.

Interesting that they list the Chargers' Drayton Florence (*) as the 23rd-best CB on the market- very surprising ( by comparison, the Bills' own injury-prone and very susceptible CB Jason Webster is 16th).

Justin Gage, Titans. Age: 27. http://www.walterfootball.com/images/fball/star.gifhttp://www.walterfootball.com/images/fball/star.gifhttp://www.walterfootball.com/images/fball/halfstar.gif
Justin Gage had three games of 90 or more yards to close the season, proving he can at least contribute in this league.

Yard, I think you and I are the only two who like this guy or think we should sign him. Everyone else seems enamored with injury prone Hackett.

Gage is definitely worth keeping an eye on. He's got the size we need (6'4", 212) without sacrificing a significant amount of speed, if any. I actually thought that until the Bears gave up on him, he was considered a player w/a very good blend of size and speed that Chicago was just exhibiting a little bit of patience to watch break out. It never happened in Chicago but a decent season came to pass for Gage in Tennessee in 2007. Maybe that portends a solid career, after all, especially when you consider that he had a strong season w/Vince Young as his primary QB (Kerry Collins started two games as well). Anyway, he obviously was drafted by the Bears when Jauron was still the coach in 2003, so DJ's familiar with his character and his capability. If the Titans don't re-up w/Gage before FA starts, I would not be surprised at all if he filled our need at second wideout when it's all said and done.

For what it's worth- and that's probably quite a lot- it's likely not in DJ's style to be enamored with a player like Hackett, who brings a definitely conceivably huge reward but also brings with himself unavoidable injury/durability issues. I still believe that if he could stay healthy that he would be an 1,000 yard receiver in this league- most observers wouldn't say that about most of these other #2's on the market. But that if- his health- is a very big if. And I'm betting Buffalo inquires more heavily into Bryant Johnson and Gage (or Ernest Wilford, though I'm increasingly hoping that we don't because while he offers size, his production probably wouldn't greatly trump Josh Reed's as our second wideout). I don't know, we'll see...

I think some people are selling Ernest Wilford short. The truth is that he has never been surrounded by other "talents" at WR, and if teamed with Lee Evans and Roscoe Parrish, he could really flourish in Buffalo. Just my $.02

I think we'll look to draft and sign a free agent at WR. Take your pick ... I'd personally go Bowman in the draft and Hackett in FA, but either way we need 5 top receivers and with Reed, Evans and Parrish onboard, that leaves two vacancies. I also think the depth at WR in the draft will dampen the FA market at this position.

We may pick up a FB. But the likes of Jed Collins has proven himself to be an excellent receiver and blocker. Here we'll probably look at R6-R7.

Center is our biggest weakness on the OL and there are really no standout candidates. I think the front office may recognise this and make a very strong inquiry forFaine as he is still comparatively young. With a new QB we need to upgrade where the draft is weakest

My concern is there is very little at FA at DT, meaning someone will get ludicrously overpaid - a 2nd Larry Triplett. I'd rather we invest our draft picks here.

I don't think there is so much at CB, that we won't stick with Thomas, Greer, McGee and Youboty, drafting someone on Day2 like Justin King.

At LB, I am not happy with the idea of resigning Haggan and Stammer. They are not starters and we are very short of depth. I would sign Teddy Lehman who seems to be over his injuries and can also be a STeamer if necessary, plus look at a Day2 selection - Bo Rudd of Nebraska could be a useful pick up

I think what we'll do in FA, and it won't be much, is go after one quality player. And I hope that will be Jeff Faine.

Mike Williams, Titans. Age: 24.
Wow. Remember when everyone thought Mike Williams would be the second coming of Keyshawn Johnson? Now he can't even make the second string on the Titans. I'm awarding Williams no stars to emphasize how much he really sucks at life.

QB Billy Volek, I can remember when a few wanted this guy a few years ago.. He is 32 and would be a good backup to TE..

FB Greg Jones Great blocker but not so good at running.. A good FB to open holes for Lynch would be nice and he is only 27..

WR I like Gage, Wilford and Hackett here.. All have great size..

TE How about Ben Utecht??

C Like alot here I like Faine and Myers..

DT Corey Williams would be nice, maybe Tommy Kelly if he is healthy, he is good against the run..

OLB Would love Karlos Dansby.. Will never happen..

CB Would like Marcus Trufant..
