Zednik was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Buffalo General Hospital, and will continue to be evaluated through the day, attending surgeon Sonya Noor said in a statement released by the hospital.

    update on Zednik

Zednik remains in stable condition this afternoon, according to Buffalo General Hospital.

In a statement released by the hospital Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Sonya Noor, the attending surgeon for Zednik, says the injured player would remain in the intensive care unit and will be evaluated throughout the day.

Zednik, 32, was injured during the Buffalo Sabres-Florida Panthers game at the HSBC Arena. His wife Jessica flew to Buffalo late Sunday night along with Karen Cohen, the wife of Florida Panthers General Partner and Chairman of the Board/Chief Executive Officer Alan Cohen.

Panthers Assistant General Manger Randy Sexton, who remained in Buffalo with Zednik last night says, "The entire Panthers organization wish to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the medical staff at Buffalo General Hospital, the Buffalo Sabres organization, the HSBC Arena staff and to the Panthers and Sabres fans who have expressed their thoughts and concerns."

Zednik successfully underwent a two-hour operation after being struck by a teammate's skate during Sunday night's Sabres game.

His agent says Zednik's carotid artery was hit by that skate and that Zednik lost a lot of blood but is expected to make a full recovery.

Some highlights from today's AP story ...

-- Carotid artery was nearly severed, just missed the jugular vein
-- Doctors didn't feel he was close to death
-- He's fully alert and remembers the incident, no signs of brain damage
-- Cut was about an inch and a half deep and wide. He was lucky no other vessels were damaged
-- Can return to normal activity in six to eight weeks

scary moment but the good news is that he'll be fine in a couple of weeks.

The most amazing part is the fact that he had the mental alertness to get to the trainers immediately- those few second he saved may have saved his life.

btw, this is getting all too commonplace in Buffalo- Everett, Ocho Cinco and now this.... unfortunately it's all part of the game and it's pure bad luck that it keeps happening to us. The only minor saving grace is that a) all 3 ended up making better-than-originally-anticipated recoveries and b) our fans consistently show class when this crap happens.

We must have a good medical area to be saving all these people's lives.

Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik, whose carotid artery was nearly severed, may be discharged from a Buffalo hospital by Saturday.

Zednik is showing so much improvement that Noor authorized a special treat -- Buffalo's famed chicken wings.

"He asked if he could eat Buffalo chicken wings," Noor said. "So we let him."

A local eatery donated wings and pizza for Zednik, his wife and nurses at Buffalo General Hospital.
