Sabres have the chips to retool

The Dallas Stars need a defenseman who can score and Brian Campbell may be their man.

Campbell isn’t the only player they should be shopping. Maxim Afinogenov, Tim Connolly, Ales Kotalik and Dmitri Kalinin also would get the Sabres a decent return. Plus, you never know when one move leads to another in the right direction.

Just to be clear, the Sabres should trade Campbell and one of the other aforementioned four, preferably Afinogenov, not all five players.

Nobody would second-guess Afinogenov’s skill or popularity. The guy could fake Tuesday into Monday. But he has 10 goals and 23 points in 49 career playoff games. This season has been a disaster. Poor play and injuries have crippled his value. But, assuming he returns in March, a contender should take a chance on him knowing he has another year left on his contract.

But look at the caption underneath the picture of campbell it says that Dallas needs a defenceman who can score.

    Campbell for Stuuuuu!

The Sabres would like to keep Campbell. He’s their best player. They’re prepared to pay him more than the five-year proposal worth $25 million that they rejected from him over the summer, which tells you plenty about the lack of foresight from upper management. Sure enough, Campbell’s stock soared.

    Same ol' song and dance.

and the part about him being their best player? I'm not so sure about that. Just because he made the All-Star team doesn't make him their best player. Nobody from the Sabres should have made that team so they had to pick someone.

Kotalik’s heavy shot makes him attractive, but the only time he made a difference here was when he rode alongside Connolly in 2005-06. He’s never scored more than 25 goals in a season. He’s had more than 38 points only once. He’s also never finished an NHL season with a positive plus-minus rating. He’s also signed through next season.

      He also sucks.

He could fake Tuesday into Monday and then promptly hand Monday over to the opposition.

Campbell is the Sabres best offensive defenseman but not their best defenseman overall. I like Campbell and hope they re-sign him but if they do they will definitely have to unload some salary. Sabres management sucks at having forthsight of the market.
