"It's funny to see Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden try to throw water on the fire that has become the feud that has developed between him and general manager Rich McKay. Gruden denied there was a problem this week when asked about reports that there was a rift. Believe this: there is a rift from both sides. And McKay and the rest of the front office aren't the only ones tired of Gruden's act. A couple of league coaches have noticed how arrogant he has become, dating back to last season -- even before he won the Super Bowl. The latest disclosure that there was a rift between Gruden and McKay didn't surprise a lot of people who know Gruden. "Look, the guy is selfish," said one personnel director. "All he cares about is what's good for him." McKay, on the other hand, exudes class. If this stays this way, the Glazer family, the owners of the Bucs, could be faced with an interesting dilemma. Do they keep the coach who got them a Super Bowl or do they keep the GM who helped them build the stadium to stay in Tampa, a stadium that generates a lot of money, and helped build the team that Gruden runs? The Bucs did a smart thing by re-signing veteran left tackle Roman Oben last week, who was a player they brought in last year. They gave him a four-year deal that averages $1.163 million. The good news for Tampa Bay is that the cap figures are relatively low for a starting tackle. His cap figure next year is $830,000, followed by $1.175 million in 2004, $1.275 million in 2005 and $1.375 million in 2006. No word on who was responsible for the signing, McKay or Gruden."
