The emerging consensus around the league is that Chargers linebacker Junior Seau needs to show some flexibility in connection with efforts to place him on a new team.

According to a league source, Seau's insistence on having the ability to hand pick his new team and his desire to keep his current contract (which includes a $2.7 million bonus to be paid on April 15) is making it very hard for the Chargers to swing a trade.

Seau also is set to receive $3 million in salary in 2003, $5 million in 2004, and $5.5 million in 2005.

The thinking is that Seau needs to be willing to re-do his contract in order to get to where he apparently wants to go, which at this point seems to be Miami.

Then again, Seau is holding all of the cards on this one, at least in the short term. The $2.7 million bonus is guaranteed, and Seau gets it even if the Chargers release him before April 15.

Regardless, if Seau won't help the Chargers trade him, Seau's contract most likely will be terminated after June 1, forcing him to start from scratch on the open market.
