The Green Bay Packers placed the franchise tag on DL Corey Williams Wednesday, Feb. 20. Williams can still sign with another team, but the Packers would have the option to match the terms of the deal or be compensated with two first-round draft picks.

Wow!! Cant believe that.

I'd heard rumours earlier in the day.

With Haynesworth and Williams both off the market, that may influence how we approach the draft, unless we take a flyer on someone like Randy Starks and hope we can light a fire under him.

There is very little left at DT in Free Agency, but a still quite a selection of LBs ... even if we don't get Briggs, there's still Ware, Boley, Hobson, Lehman, all of whom will bring experience yet relative youth to the LB Corps.

This move may make it more likely we don't go after Rivers, as we won't be able to secure the top DT to help protect the LBs against the run

Starks becomes the top DT now, or one of them so there is not taking a flyer on him, he'll cost a pretty penny.

Ware, and Boley are both RFA's with 1st Round tenders, and Hobson and Lehman dont give us much more than we already have, just imo.

Packers release Franks....

Packers released TE Bubba Franks. When healthy, Franks was an effective blocker and red-zone option in '07, but his body is beginning to fall apart. Franks certainly wouldn't have been worth the $3.5 million he was due. Old pal Mike Holmgren could bring him on as a backup for around the minimum, but he's nowhere near starting caliber.

Not surprised, certainly dissapointed.. I didn't think we would take a real run at him anyway.

Whether it's via FA or draft, they must do something to upgrade over Kyle Williams at the 1-Gap.
