    Modrak talks about DT's

    Today

The defensive tackles won't be here in the media room until tomorrow, and they won't work out for the scouts until Monday. But the Bills chief scout gave us a couple of names to chew on today. Vice Preisdent of College Scouting Tom Modrak mentioned size at DT as a priority for the Bills, just as Dick Jauron did in our conversation yesterday. It's obvious the top two DTs are Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis, and the Bills have little chance of drafting them with their 11th overall pick. But Modrak says two DTs are on the Bills radar screen: Kentwan Balmer of North Carolina and Pat Sims of Auburn. Both are projected to be first or second rounders. Balmer is 6-5, 308lbs, about 13-15 pounds heavier than his playing weight for the Tar Heels last year. He pulled out of the Senior Bowl practices early after injuring his hamstring. Pat Sims is entering the draft after his junior year at Auburn. He's 6-4, 312lbs, and had 41/2 sacks in his 13 starts last year. ---

Just keep in mind. Just because they do or don't interview at the combine doesnt always mean anything.

Buffalo never interviewed Trent Edwards once last year before picking him in the draft.

So yes, a lot could be smokescreens.

I don't think they even interviewed Marshawn either.

We had a chance to talk with the Bills new QB Coach Alex Van Pelt today. And we talked about last year's combine, and the Bills evaluation of Trent Edwards. Yesterday, Dick Jauron told us the Bills did not interview Edwards at the combine. But today, Van Pelt said, in fact, they tried to interview Edwards, but he had a terrible case of stomach flu. According to Alex, Edwards cut the interview short because he was so sick. Later, when Edwards went out to throw and work out in the RCA Dome, Van Pelt told us he was amazed that Edwards could function, given how sick he was during the interview. Van Pelt says of all the things Edwards did and said at the 2007 combine, that was the most impressive. We''ll have the entire one-on-one interview with Van Pelt posted later today at buffalobills.com ---

                  Re: Modrak talks about DT's

                  Not sure they are.

Last year everyone knew we were taking Lynch unless Peterson fell to us.

This year I think they regard the interior of the DL as a priority on the D side and WR on the O side.

The difference is there is a choice, with 6 or 7 WRs very close we could pick up any and signficantly upgrade

                  Kelly
                  Sweed
                  Hardy
                  Doucet
                  Thomas
                  Manningham
                  Bowman

and at least 4 DTs outside of Ellis and Dorsey making the grade like Sims, Balmer, Bryant and Moore

Actually could Ellis and Dorsey be TOO SMALL for the direction we want to go?

That means you can cross all of them off the list. They're looking at someone else.

I don't think we're showing anything. I think Modrak was asked about these DTs in particular and he is mearly commenting on them. As often think media members like Murphy et all just go to draft websites to pick up on names that might be available when we pick and ask guys like Modrak what they think about them. As Murphy eluded to Dorsey and Ellis not being available. SO bet he asked something along the lines, "What do you think about Kentwan Balmer and Pat Sims" and bet Modrak said something along the lines they are guys we're looking at and then mentioned their size etc.

Trevor Laws weighs about 280-285lbs - not exactly the BIG run stuffing tackle
