View Full Version : My Ideal Draft/Free Agency

Free Agency:
1.) Drayton Florence, CB, UFA from San Diego
2.) Boss Bailey, LB, UFA from Detroit
3.) Kelly Holcomb, QB, UFA Philadelphia ( This is IF we cut or trade Losman. I've never had a problem with Holcomb being a backup on this team. )

Draft: ( I would love for us to trade down but that would make my mock too complex and unrealistic, so I'll instead go with our current draft picks.. Btw, if we do trade down to say the end of the first round, I could see us taking Red Bryant from Texas A&M or Kelly, Sweed or Hardy. )

Rd1.) Kentwan Balmer, DT, NC ( Here's your 2 gap guy, Dick. I saw some clips of this guy and he looks to really be a beast. I had no idea when he first came to NC he only weighed like 230-240lbs. WOW! )
Rd2.) Calais Campbell, DE, Miami ( It's funny because before the draft talk really started to get heavy, this guy was projected as a top 10 pick. We need more pressure on the QB and this guy in the 2nd round wont cost us much. )
Rd3a.) Adarius Bowman, WR, Oklahoma ( The big bodied WR that everybody wants. )
Rd3b.) Martin Rucker, TE, Mizzou ( The reason I take him here is beacuse Keller is already off the board. )
Rd4.) Marcus Griffin, S, Texas ( Great in coverage and a thumper in the secondary he may not be a 'starter' but he would see alot of snaps in our cover schemes. Plus, who the hell do we got behind Whitner and Simpson? )
Rd5a.) Andre Fluellen, DT, FSU ( Why not? Beats the crap out of having Jefferson in the rotation. )
Rd5b.) Jacob Hester, FB, LSU ( Owen Schmitt and Peyton Hillis are long gone so we go with the next best thing.. )
Rd6.) Don't give a crap!
Rd7.) Don't give a crap!

Cheap veteran FA who knows the system and he is better than Losman. Why not?

Interesting choices.

I'm not sure about the FA. Do we need a CB like Florence? I'd probably draft a CB in a deep class leaving us with McGee, Greer, Thomas, with opportunities for Youboty?

I think we need in this order

1) A LB - I'd go Lehman .. Bailey has been playing SLB, I'd shift Angelo back
2) A WR - Bryant Johnson and maybe a flyer on Mike Williams
3) FB - Dan Kreider providing some veteran leadership in the backfield
4) LT - we need a better backup for Peters - Mike Pearson of the Argos
5) DT - my preference is for a young DT like Randy Starks
6) FS - Eugene Wilson for veteran leadership

My latest draft is on other threads but I propose firstly dropping out of R1 with a trade garnering a R1 pick in 2009, and then dealing back into R1 with someone like the Chargers giving up our 6th as part of the deal. It then goes

1. Pat Sims DT
2. Quentin Groves DE
3a. Justin King CB
3b. John Carlson TE
4. Adarius Bowman WR .. his 40 time drops him
5a. Jeremy Zuttah OL
5a. Kirk Barton G/T
7a. Andrew Studebaker OLB/DE
7b. Ricky Santos

and the roster

QB Edwards, Losman or FREE AGENT, Santos*
WR Evans, Reed, Parrish
WR JOHNSTON, Bowman*, M WILLIAMS
TE Royal, Carlson*, Gaines
LT Peters, PEARSON
LG Dockery, Zuttah*
C Fowler, Merz
RG Butler, Barton*
RT Walker, Butler
RB Lynch, Jackson, Wright
FB KREIDER, undrafted rookie
K Liandell

RE Schobel, Groves*
3T McCargo, STARKS
1T Sims*, K Williams
LE Kelsay, Denney
SLB LEHMAN, Studebaker*
MLB Posluzny, DiGiorgio
WLB Crowell, Ellison, Wire
RCB Greer, Thomas, King*
LCB McGree, Youboty
SS Whitner, Wendling
FS E.WILSON, Simpson
P Moorman

Of course, I like mine more :)

Florence and Griffin vs. Wilson and King.

I wouldn't mind Carlson at 3b. ( Keller, Rucker and Carlson at 3b are all good picks. )

A Bills fan or not, I'll pass on Mike Williams

Do you trade down for Pat Sims or do you take him at #11? On most draft boards I see Balmer is rated above Sims and sometimes Sims isn't even in the top 5 for DT's. I've seen Balmer, Bryant, Laws and even Okham rated higher than Sims. With your draft I could see us taking best DE available (Harvey?) and us grabbing Sims in the 2nd.

My proposal is this.

I reckon the Rams, Chiefs or Falcons might trade back into R1, the first two to grab Ryan Clady if they have missed on Jake Long, the Falcons if they want to grab Brohm, having gone nonQB with No3

We get their 2nd, 4th and crucially their R1 in 2009.

With our 2nd, 4th and 6th, we trade with the Chargers to get back into R1 at 27 and draft Pat Sims

I've seen Okam in the 5th round on occasion. I think Sims is probably 4th best ranked DT with Bryant as a truer NT and Moore and Laws fighting for 5th place.

We will have

27 (R1) Sims
33 (Rams), 35 (Chiefs) or 37 (Falcons) ... all high enough for Groves?
41 to the Chargers
71 King
72 Carlson
97 (Rams) or 99 (Falcons) or 101 (Chiefs) Bowman

etc

and most importantly we have two R1 picks in 2009 and unless these teams have a Browns like comeback year, a top 10 or maybe even a top5 pick allowing us to have a really 'sick' chance at a top top player like one of the best LBs, a WR like Crabtree etc, and still have our own R1.

Because this years draft is deep at positions we need, we can trade down, still get quality and be right at the top of a shallower draft next year.

I love your draft, BF, and your FA signings other than Holcomb. Just not a fan of his, although he would fill a need.

I hate it, still no legitimate weapons for our horrible play at QB.

Bowman and Rucker should help, but we probably would need to pick up a WR in free agency with BF's draft.

Bowman is way too over hyped as was inconsistent at best in college. I'd rather just keep Gaines than going with Rucker. No thanks to both.

Err with my draft and Free Agency we get

Bryant Johnson
Adarius Bowman
John Carlson
and who knows Mike Williams might come good

and by securing an extra R1 pick in 2009 we will have a chance at a guy like Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech, a huge playmaking weapon at WR, and still have a chance to upgrade a QB with someone like Todd Boeckmann and a TE like Anthony Quarless, with our own R1 and R2 picks.

To coin a phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day" .... we cannot get all our areas sorting out but with clever manipulation of the draft, we will have a great array of weapons in the 2009 season

We've been trying to build Rome for a ****ing decade, it gets old making excuses.

no disrespect but I think that would make for a TERRIBLE off-season. I dont think there is a FA or Draft choice you listed that would make a lick of difference for this team in 2008.

Even if Balmer turns out to be good, I highly doubt he'd be productive for us in any way this season.. You could pretty much bank on a John McCargo route.

With FA, Bailey is an underachiever, I fail to realize why so many people on here are clamoring for him.

The past is the past.

We cannot get it fixed entirely for the 2008 season. I think my way would get a maximum return in 2years max

The John McCargo route, what are you saying that Balmer is going to get injured his rookie year?

Btw, Boss Bailey is a good player.. He isn't a Lance Briggs but he is definately a serviceable veteran.

BF, the problem is everyone seems to what a supposed superstar, a banner name to appease the fans in very much the same way as Tom Donahoe tried to build this roster.

Some of these guys you mention are of course, not a Takeo Spikes in his prime. However did that get us to the PlayOffs? A winning record?

The Chargers made it to the Championship game, with NO FREE AGENT signings. They only traded for Chambers after Parker got injured.

Their big free agents? Mike Goff, Marlon McCree, Lorenzo Neal.
