An example: The San Diego Chargers.

I was amazed to discover that the Chargers made No Free agent signings last year. They picked up some undrafted Free Agents like Tra Battle but the big Free Agent names on their current roster are Marlon McCree, Mike Goff and Lorenzo Neal.

Since picking one pick behind us in 2002 - they have gone from strength to strength. Despite a few misses (Toniu Fonoti, Sammy Davis etc), they have assembled a real core of players.

In 2003, they traded down and got an extra R2 from the Eagles.

In 2004, they traded down swaping selections with the Giants, taking advantage of the hard on they had for Manning, still got the QB they wanted in Rivers and got an extra R1 pick the following year which turned into Shawn Merriman

In 2005 came Merriman & Castillo, and despite their need at WR kept their powder dry drafting Vincent Jackson to much criticism at the time as I recall

In 2006 Cromartie and McNeill were the risky choices that paid off

Clearly AJ Smith waits and takes the players he wants not blinded by the assessment of others.

In 2007 came Davis and the Weddle trade up

Only once has AJ Smith traded up in the first two rounds and that was for Weddle. Twice in 5 years he has actually traded down in R1 and never traded up. He only has ever traded up, when the roster was all but complete.

He has only once traded a high pick for a veteran and that was for Chambers but ONLY after Parker was injured in pre-season and after that years draft, where there was a whole season before he could draft another WR.

Personally I think AJ Smith is a great GM, and I think the lessons the likes of Modrak and Brandon have hopefully learnt are.

1) There is seldom a need to trade up in R1 and no guarantees in doing so, no matter how good the 'potential' of a player people talk about coming out of college.
2) Trading down in R1 often provides additional picks for players who become quality starters.
3) Frequently teams will develop such a love of a player that they can be manipulated into overpaying for them - especially for people in the QB and LT positions.
4) Only trade draft picks for players after the draft has occured when you might be desperate because of injury.
5) In an era of Free Agency, it is not always necessary to use Free Agency to quickly assemble a very good side.

At the end of 2003, finishing with a 4-12 record, they have since gone 12-4, 9-7 (missed playoffs), 14-2 and 11-5.

Not bad for a team that relies on its draft picks and minimal free agency activity.

With clever manipulation of the draft, I think we are the 2008 and the 2009 drafts away from the Championship game with minimal Free Agency acqusitions.

A suggestion of how:

2008 draft

R1 trade out of R1 with Rams/Falcons/Chiefs for their R2, R4 and R1'09. They could want a franchise QB (Brohm) or LT (Clady). Trade back into R1 with the Charger using our R2, R4, and R6. They have no needs and no picks in R2-4
R1 (Chargers) Pat Sims DT
R2 (traded pick) Quentin Groves DE
R3a Justin King CB
R3b John Carlson TE
R4 Adarius Bowman WR
R5a Jeremy Zuttah OL
R5b Kirk Barton OL
R7a Andrew Studebaker OLB
R7b Ricky Santos QB

No LB but Ellison and DiGiorgio may surprise with better run stuffing (Sims) and pass rushing (Groves) ahead of them. Studebaker might be a flyer but could be talented SLB. 3 boring FAs to sign are Lehman who could also start, Pearson to properly back up Peters and Kreider.

With Bowman starting at No2 WR and Carlson being a better receiver, we can make our way to a 10-6 record with Sims stuffing the run alongside McCargo, allowing Tripplett to be properly used as a pass rushing DT.

We can offer new deals to Peters, Evans and Crowell rather than letting this linger as well as offer better deals to our role players like K Williams, Butler, Simpson etc who by keeping them in the family will aid consistency and maintain our depth. This will allow us to meet the salary cap requirements.

Come the 2009 draft we can then look at this

R1 (extra pick from last years trade) Michael Crabtree WR - elite player
R1 Sean Lee WLB
R2 Anthony Qualress TE (giving us a 2 TE threat)
R2 Trade up our R3, plus a R5 for Todd Boeckmann QB
R3 from the JP Losman trade in 2008 preseason, Lawrence Wilson DE
R4 A Q Shipley C
R6 Line depth
R7 Kreider's eventual replacement

In two drafts, we've got a superior Dline, adding run stuffing in Sims and pass rushing from both flanks (Groves & Wilson), a quality LB Corps (Crowell-Pos-Lee), and the secondary has been allowed to grow and develop because of better pressure ahead of it.

Merz has moved into C, giving us a monstrous OL, and we now have Edwards or Boeckmann (pocket passers with big arms) with a set of weapons like Carlson, QUARLESS, Evans, Bowman, Reed, Parrish and CRABTREE, with Kreider smashing further holes for Lynch and Jackson.

All through 3 bottom end Free agents.

A Championship team?

Dick has to win with the players he drafted the last 2 years and the FA players he will bring in for next season. He doesn't have the luxury of waiting for 08 and 09 to develop and win games for us unless drafts players this year that will make remarkable impact like Colston did for the Saints. If we don't make playoffs this year, he won't be around to see the 08 draft develop, IMO.

That draft and those moves have the makings of a team that would be lucky to win four games.

That draft and those moves have the makings of a team that would be lucky to win four games.

Explain?

1) We get a big body in the middle of the line able to help stuff the run and pressure the QB
2) We get at the very least a 3rd down pass runsher but a guy who has had experience at LB for Auburn as well
3) We get a CB for depth, but someone equally able to step up with size and speed
3) We get a pass catching TE who upgrades the position
4) We get the big No2 WR, who has slipped a little because of his timed speed but we all know that timed speed is not the same as game speed.

And we get a R1 in 2009 + ours which

a) could easily be used for Michael Crabtree who at WR is head and shoulders above any WR in this class
b) a LB like James Faurinaitis for the middle or Sean Lee for the OLB, both of whom are at least the equal of any LB in this class
c) we can still manoever for a TE like Anthony Quarless who is bigger and better than mini-me Fred Davis

Imagine starting the 2009 season and we end up with a LB crew of Crowell-Pos-Lee, a DL which includes are widebody and a new passrusher to pressure Schobel and Kelsay, and a Receiving Corps of Evans, Crabtree, Bowman with Quarless and Carlson.

We constantly criticise the front office for lacking any vision and then we precisely demonstrate a complete lack of vision on here.

Win 4 games? This team would have to work hard to lose 4 games !!
