well i know he loses one with the ring when it goes into the fire. But i don't know how many he started with. I think 9 is too obvious an aswer.

So i'm gonna go with seven. I'm hoping hobbits only have 8 fingers. Am I right or wrong?

Cntrygal

Basics for awhile might inspire some new people to join in and give me a chance to reread the books!! :D

"Who was the proprietor of the Prancing Pony?"

Mad Bomber
08-02-2002, 04:23 PM

BUZZ! Wrong answer...

They called themselves the "Uendilnili" - Literally, the "devotees of Uendil".

But actually this has nothing to do with Lord of the Rings. This is all Second Age stuff from the Silmarillion..

Since the DVD of Fellowship of the Ring is coming out tomorrow (I'm picking it up at around 5am your time Arctic), let's try to get back to the LOTR....

HONEY!!!!!!!!!!

It is SO great to see you posting here!

I spent my weekend tracking you down...we played e-mail, PM tag...

The 3rd evil that afflicted Gondor was.....

flatulence.

The evils that afflicted Gondor were:

1. Halitosis
2. Impotence
3. Flatulence

The people of Gondor were NOT very attractive...

honey
08-05-2002, 07:40 PM
MAD!!!! Nice to see you! I don't think it was flatulence, LOLOLOL!

The westernmost border of the Shire was Westmarch wasn't it?

Hey, I'm going to see Cntry at Sturgis this week, isn't that cool?

Speaking of that, I should try to track her down to tell her how she can recognize me at the bar.

Mad Bomber
08-05-2002, 07:46 PM
Let me guess..

You're the redhead in the pink shirt???

honey
08-05-2002, 07:57 PM

I used to play the oboeie...

honey
08-05-2002, 08:02 PM
Haha, I would kinda LIKE to play the flutie, but I have one of my own, if you know what I mean. I think I liked Flutie because he reminded me of a young Frank (my hubby), short, dark hair, brown eyes, muscular, etc.....Did you get that I'm going to Sturgis this week? Tomorrow actually. Cntry is going to meet us at a bar there. Purty cool!

Mad Bomber
08-05-2002, 08:24 PM
Your husband is a midget? Cool! So is my wife!

Also, my first name is Frank. That's probably why I've always been called by my middle name

What's a Sturgis? Isn't it that big fish that yields caviar? No wait...that's a sturgeon.

Anyway, wherever Sturgis is, it sounds cool, if you're gonna see Cntrygal. Personally, I'd like to meet you both face-to-face....

honey
08-05-2002, 08:27 PM
Come on out, then, Mad!! We'd (well, I can't speak for Cntry, but...) like to meet you, too. Sturgis, BTW, is THE motorcycle rally get-together. My husband's daughter is getting married there Thursday, so that's why we're going.

Yes, My husband is a midget, but I'm smaller than he is, so that's ok. Both the boys will probably be shorties, too. My 14 year old is almost as tall as I am right now, tho, so who knows???

Mad Bomber
08-05-2002, 08:56 PM
WHERE is Sturgis?

I live on the far right coast (near NYC).

BTW, that would be a great place to have a wedding!

honey
08-05-2002, 09:12 PM
Sturgis is in South Dakota at the base of the mountains kinda in the northwest part. A little bitty town with lots going on this week!

She's wearing bone-colored LEATHER with FRINGE!

Cntrygal
08-05-2002, 09:41 PM
LOL.... how do the two of you keep getting off track?!? LOL... but since you did... how short is short honey? Am I going to feel like a giant? Mad - you are more than welcome to come on out. We are going to be at the "Broken Spoke". Just follow all the harley's west on I90. Some of the outfits get pretty wild during the rally. I told honey that she would be able to recognize me by the fact that I am wearing CLOTHES. :D Honey - I usually get off work around 4ish... but call me whenever you get in (or close).

(I think it's Honey's turn with a question btw ;) )

honey
08-10-2002, 05:24 AM

Cntrygal
08-11-2002, 05:43 PM

honey
08-11-2002, 05:53 PM
It was a summons to war.

Cntrygal
08-11-2002, 05:57 PM

honey
08-11-2002, 06:02 PM

StillLurkin...... I cheat.... I look alot of the stuff up in the books. That's what we are mainly asking the questions out of. I'm on my 2nd reading of the books, but Mad and Arctic have read them a ton of times. Honey either has a fantastic memory or has read them a ton of times too. (last I knew Honey couldn't even find her copies of the books) Feel free to join us!!!!! :)

Honey... I know I have seen the answer to your question.. but need to look it up. But I'll tack a WAG at it and say "6".

honey
08-12-2002, 09:31 AM
Cntry - better look it up. Six is not right. Or as Arctic would say - BUZZZZZZ! LOL

honey
08-12-2002, 09:42 AM
StillLurkin - I've read the books a lot (probably 10 times at least), but I cheat, too. I finally found my books hiding in a box, cntry. I swore my husband hid them on me, but as it turns out, I actually hid them on myself.

Here's a different question...

Where does the movie deviate from the book first?

Mad Bomber
08-12-2002, 09:19 PM
The very first scene... the battle where Sauron's ring was cut from him happened at the base of Mt. Doom in Mordor. In fact, the battle happened outside Mordor (hence the Dead Marshes).

Gunzlingr

Arwen.

In the movie, Gandalf talks to a moth to summon the Eagle to rescue him from the top of Orthanc.

Two questions:

1) Who was the Eagle?

2) How was he summoned to Orthanc in the book?

honey
08-15-2002, 07:04 AM
The eagle's name was Gwaihir.

He was summoned to Orthanc by Radagast, sort of. I think Radagast had the eagles look all around the countryside, not necessarily for Gandalf, but for signs of war. And Gwaihir found Gandalf and took him off Orthanc.

Since I haven't seen the movie yet (soon, very soon), I'll have to ask a question from the books. What was the gift the Lady of Rivendell sent to Aragorn before he went on the Paths of the Dead?

Cntrygal
08-18-2002, 07:06 PM
a staff.... :D

Gunzlingr - not sure yet about the Vikes/Bills game. I'd love to go, but if we have hay down in the field and it's a nice day, I have to get it baled. We're way behind this year because of all the rain we've had and not a whole lot of hot, dry weather. However, if we get all the hay up in the next week or two, I'm definitely gonna try to get tickets!

Cntry - Look on the last page of chapter 2, Book 3. Now - THAT'S a hint!!!

Did she give him Anduril?

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 07:50 PM
Hi! I'm back!

Before Aragorn took off thru the Paths of the Dead, Elrohir gave him a silver horn.

What did he call the dead guys?

honey
08-21-2002, 08:42 PM
Oh, Mad, that's not what I'm looking for, either. I guess I'll just have to tell you - Halbarad gave him a great standard - all black.

Aragorn called the dead guys "Oathbreakers".

What was Mindolluin?

And, btw, nice to see you again, Mad!

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 08:51 PM
Thanks honey,

Mindolluin was the eastern peak of the Ered Nimrais (White Mountains). Minas Tirith was built under it. Good question!!!

BTW, I bought the LOR DVD; my 13-year old son has wached it ever dy and is now about halfway thru reading the Fellowship of the Ring. Must be genetic...

My question....

What was the cause of death of the Lord of the Ringwraiths?

honey
08-21-2002, 08:57 PM
Ok, I'm gonna guess on this one. Was it when Merry pierced him after he struck Dernhelm/Eowyn down? No question yet as I don't know if I'm right.

honey
08-21-2002, 09:01 PM
Oh, hey, Mad - I FINALLY got my hands on the movie, but haven't watched it yet. Frank's home and isn't really in to LOTR so doesn't want to tie up three hours of TV at night. Also, my little one is staying with his half-sister in the cities until tomorrow and both the kids (14 year old and 9 year old) want to watch it with me. I almost can't wait, tho, I may have to watch it tomorrow morning by myself! My oldest wants to know (this is his question) which two characters had fingers missing with regard to THE RING?

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 09:01 PM
Ding! Ding! Ding! You're right!

The key part of Merry's being able to kill him was the sword he used.

Why was the sword so significant? Who forged it?

honey
08-21-2002, 09:07 PM
The men of the Westernesse or the Duinedain, made it.

What was another name for Dwimorberg?

(I can't believe I got that last ??? right! That was just calling on my memory!)

honey
08-21-2002, 09:16 PM
Hey, Mad - I see you're still here. What are ya - cheating? So do I! BTW, did you ask Cntry about our meeting in Sturgis? It was purty cool!

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 09:20 PM
The Haunted Mountain. It's where the Gate of the Dead was found.

What was the name of the wall built across Helm's Gate that guarded the entrance to Helm's Deep?

honey
08-21-2002, 09:22 PM
Oh, God, Mad. What a question. Hang on, I gotta look.....

Ok, it was the Hornburg (hey, I should have known that - my folks have a "lake/pond" named the Hornburger on their land).

Did you see my kid's question?

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 09:40 PM
Close but no cigar...

Hornburg was a castle. What was the name of the wall?

BTW, what was your kid's question?

honey
08-21-2002, 09:47 PM
Which two characters had a finger missing because of THE RING was my kid's question.

The answer to your question must be the Hornrock????? :big grin:

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 09:56 PM
Your answer about the Hornburg was close; the wall laid beneath it, and was connected to the Hornburg by a flight of steps.

honey
08-21-2002, 10:00 PM
Wasn't it the Hornrock? Am I wayyyyy off base here?

Mad Bomber
08-21-2002, 10:06 PM
Actually, it was called the Deeping Wall.

Mad Bomber
08-22-2002, 07:24 PM

Tower of Guard

Before it was renamed Minas Tirith, it was called Minas ____

Mad Bomber
08-27-2002, 10:04 PM
Before it was Minas Tirith, it Was Minas Anor, which meant the "Tower of the Setting Sun"

Here's a tough one, but you can find it in the Fellowship of the Ring:

What was another name of the 'star lady', Varda Elantari? Her name was used in an Elven song, and used by Frodo when he was fighting the Nazgul?

Two words....

Mad Bomber
09-02-2002, 04:42 PM
Love that chapter, especially Legolas & Gimli's friendly competition about who could kill more orcs.

Ultimate victory came from the Huorns, who ate up the escaping orcs. That was at the very end of the battle though. Is that what you were referring to?
