    Leaguewide free-agency scramble under way

The Buffalo Bills will need to act quickly if they want to do any serious damage in the NFL’s free-agency derby.
The NFL’s shopping season began at midnight, and most of the top players are expected to be gobbled up within a week — if not a few days — because there are so few stars available.
Buffalo entered the free-agency season with about $26 million of room under the NFL’s salary cap, according to calculations by The Buffalo News.
The Bills could look toward Jacksonville to try to make their first move. There has been speculation for months that the Bills might pursue Jaguars wide receiver Ernest Wilford, because he exhibits all the qualities the Bills need at the position — size, strength, experience and a track record of production.
The Bills also are believed to have an interest in Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud. It was revealed Thursday that Stroud was given permission to seek a trade. Numerous teams, however, are reported to be interested in Stroud, a 330-pound three-time Pro Bowler who has been hindered by injury the past year. One of those was Detroit, which is trying to move its own big defensive tackle, Shaun Rogers.
The Bills’ biggest needs are at wide receiver, defensive tackle and tight end. Buffalo also could use help at linebacker and perhaps cornerback and backup quarterback.
