Vanguard graduates Drayton Florence and Daunte Culpepper are among the legion of NFL players hitting the open market today, and each is excited about the possibilities.
Florence has played cornerback for the San Diego Chargers since the team drafted him in 2003, but recently gave way to Antonio Cromartie on the Chargers' depth chart. By most accounts, the 6-foot, 195-pound veteran is ranked behind only Patriots star Asante Samuel among available players at his position.
While his options should be plentiful, Florence told the Detroit Free-Press on Thursday that he expects to hear from the Detroit Lions, the former team of Forest graduate Tony Beckham.
"I've heard that they're interested," Florence told the newspaper. "I know they need corners bad up there, and that possibly may be a good fit for me."
The 27-year-old is looking forward to exploring his worth on the open market for the first time. Florence signed a five-year deal upon being drafted out of Tuskegee University.
"This free agency thing is a real exciting time, and I'm just ready for it to begin. It's like being a kid right before Christmas. It's a fun time," said Florence, who had 2 interceptions in 2007 and 2 more interceptions in the playoffs. "I had a good time out in San Diego, five years. I started off my career out there, played pretty well, and it's time to move on."
Published reports have also linked the former Knights star to the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys.
