If we sign an RFA and the team that has rights to him chooses not to match the offer then we owe that team compensation in the amount of the tender that they gave that player...correct? Or do we owe that team whatever pick that player was drafted at?

It depends on what level they tender him at. If they tender him at the lowest level, it's a pick in the round the player was drafted (UDFA's only give the former team right of first refusal). If it's a 3rd round tender, it costs a 3rd. If it's a 1st...

There are 4 tender levels:

Low -- 927,000 (compensation would be round in which player entered the NFL)

Second round -- $1.41 million

First round -- $2.01 million

First & third round -- $2.56 million

Wasn't there a 3rd round level originally?

No, the 2nd round level was added last year. There used to only be 3 levels.

Huh. Coulda sworn there was a 3rd round tender. Oh well, you learn something new every day.

The reason I ask is because I thought Ryan Fitzpatrick would be a good RFA to go after for a back-up QB but I am not sure what we would have to give up for a pick if we got him.

Cincinnati tendered Fitzpatrick at the low level, so it would cost a 7th round draft pick (the round he was drafted in) if a team signed him to an offer sheet and the Bengals didn't match.

I'd give up a 7th round pick to get him in here. The pickings are getting slim with FA QB's.
