I hope this guy isnt as injury prone as it says.Apparently in 2001 he had that ACL problem,November of 2002 he broke his arm as well .So lets hope the injury bug is gone......

He will be our nickel back... wow, I can't believe we got him... he's a real special teams ace! It looks more and more likely like Mathis will not be a consideration in the first round this year.

In September it will be almost 2 years since Sidney suffered his ACL injury, which is more than enough time for it to heal. The broken arm doesn't worry me because that can heal to better than new.

Brian H

In Madden 2002 his overall rating is a 70 which is good.......

he's good enough to start at CB for most NFL teams, and will be great for our special teams

It'll be a very interesting training camp. A lotta guys will be fighting for that 3rd (and important as we found out last year) corner spot.

We need more interceptions and this guy seems like he can get some done......

Great pick up!! Suddenly, I'm not so sure we will pick up a DB in one of the first 2 rounds. Seems, like a simliar pick up to that of Marcus Jones. One with high rewards if he can come back from his injury.

Sounds like the same deal as Marcus Jones - low risk, potentially high reward. If those two guys work out our defense is loaded.

Bills add depth with acquisition of Sidney

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Having already added at least three new defensive starters through free agency, the Buffalo Bills continued to build quality depth on Thursday, with ESPN.com learning that the club has reached an agreement with unrestricted veteran Dainon Sidney.

The five-year veteran spent his entire previous career with the Tennessee Titans and knee and forearm injuries have limited him to five appearances over the past two seasons. Sidney drew surprising interest, however, during the signing period, and rejected offers from the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions to join the Bills instead.

Contract details were not immediately available. One of the team pursuing Sidney, though, was interested in actually guaranteeing a portion of his base salary for 2003.

The interest in Sidney, who played collegiately at Alabama-Birgmingham, is a tribute to the fact there are teams that still feel that, at age 27, he can yet be a solid defensive back. He has the kind of size (6-feet-0, 185 pounds) teams seek at the position and, even after the spate of injuries, runs well.

Sidney chose the Bills, in part, because of his familiarity with coach Gregg Williams, who was the defensive coordinator under whom he first worked at Tennessee. He is also a close friend of defensive back Izell Reese, a former teammate at Alabama-Birmingham, and a veteran who also signed with the Bills as a free agent two weeks ago.

Given the makeup of the Buffalo roster, Sidney should have a chance to vie for the "nickel" cornerback spot, and could win it if he can stay healthy. He certainly demonstrated great promise his first two seasons with the Titans, and was expected to challenge for a starting job in 2001, when he sustained a serious knee injury in the season opener.

Buffalo officials agreed they are betting that Sidney will return to his prior form in 2003 and allow that, if that occurs, they got a steal.

In five seasons, Sidney has appeared in 48 games and started five of them. He has 73 tackles, six interceptions and 16 passes defensed. He picked off three passes each in 1999 and 2000 and had 11 passes defensed, playing as the No. 3 cornerback, in 1999.

when you say great for our special teams, do you mean as a gunner or a return man?

Dicknoze69

This is a great pick up. He'll be our nickel back.

He is more of a gunner and special teams demon, not so much a returner.

Yeah, that's why we have Kevin Thomas, and I'm sure we'll draft another CB somewhere in the draft. Never can have enough CB's in todays game.

Our CBs are pretty solid now, we only have one problem, once we draft we will have to start cutting guys :(

ublinkwescore
04-10-2003, 07:59 PM
And we will only be cutting the weak links on our team.

Lower-end draft picks are going to have to earn a spot on this team. Actually that's not the biggest concern.

We're going to have a really good practice squad. It's going to be very tough to keep these players, 'cuz, as you all know, the practice squad isn't a safe place to keep prospects. Other teams can snatch them up unless you immediately add them to your 53-man roster. I bet we loose a couple of our practice-squad guys this year.

i dont think we take another CB in the draft at this point..

clements, winfield, thomas, sidney is a good enough group.. then we have last years guys too.. bostic and brooks who didnt play bad.. bye watson.

i do still hope we replace driver with mathis... mathis could be used as another corner too at times.

does anyone know what round sidney was drafted in?

Out of respect, they may keep Watson to compete throughout camp, then cut him. :snicker:

Sidney was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1998 draft. Go Bills!

Couchscout.com lists Dainon Sidney's 40 time at 4.33. There are a few CBs in the NFL that are faster, but not many. Clements and Winfield are both listed at 4.37 though I think that might be a little generous. I thought they were right around 4.4. Dainon's two injuries sound like they're totally unrelated. Hopefully, it was just one of those things and he can go on to have a great career as a Bill.

I think the significance of this signing is that the Bills may now be four deep with solid corners. I'm assuming the instincts Kevin Thoms showed at the end of the season last year were no fluke. At the start of last season we had Winfield and Clements and that was it. We didn't know how bad Watson was going to be o course. Bostic is not going to be 100% at the start of the season and may not be able to contribue much the whole season. Brooks and a few other free agent types fill out the roster. As of right now, Buffalo could lose one of their top four CBs to injury and still be better off than last year at the start of the season.

bostic is hurt that bad? he may not make the team then

The_Philster

They could just stick him on IR or the PUP list. Personally, I'd prefer he be placed on PUP just in case he's able to play later in the season and we wind up needing him.

If we can get Watson matched up on their worst reciever, he is not that bad (he was always on their best player), and he kicks some ass on special teams.

How much is he making?

I think the second Jets game signaled the end of his tenure in Buffalo. I think the Bills are just waiting for June 1

Only way I see Watson staying is if we try and convert him back to a kick/punt returner. That's our one weak spot now.

I say go for Charles Tillman, CB, in the draft in the 3rd round. He could play FS if Driver, Reese, or Prioleau bust.
