I've been wanting to get a better idea of what you're all seeing on your monitor and how you have them set up... If you wouldn't mind taking a couple minutes to do this 'test', it should help me immensely.. the more responses the better too.

There is a graphic posted below with 3 rows of grey boxes, each with 6 boxes containing different shades of grey, darkest (1.0) through lightest (2.7).

If you don't already know, figure out if you're using a CRT monitor or an LCD - easiest way to tell is a CRT will be at least 12 inches or more in depth, whereas an LCD will be maybe an inch deep.

On a CRT, make sure the monitors been on for at least a half an hour, then look at the graphics below. Now get up and move back away from the monitor, until you can't see the checkerboard pattern behind the small grey boxes, and figure out which small grey box appears to blend into the background the best. You can also do this in your seat by squinting your eyes. Then just post a response in here with whatever number was in that box.

This isn't as accurate on an LCD, but just make sure you're looking at the monitor straight on - make sure your screen isn't tilted, and that you keep your eyes level with the row of boxes you're looking at.

Thanks a lot everybody!

Well Jjamezz, I've got an LCD, and if I move back any further I'll be standing in my garage. I would have to say 1.4.

I have a CRT and I see 1.8 being the closest.

And my eyes are actually certified to see the slightest difference in shades of colors.

Roughly anywhere between 1.8 and 2.1 is about right.. LCD's tend to be brighter than CRT's, but they don't display colors as well..

I'm on an LCD, and 'stock' mine was around 1.6 - and seeing your readings, I can really imitate what you guys are seeing, eliminating guesswork.. I just wish I'd thought of this a long time ago... lol

What kind of monitor you have Miagi? Thats the brightest reading I've seen for a CRT - maybe there should be a prize for the best calibrated monitor...

It's just a standard stock Dell M991 (19"). I have no idea who the vendor is.

at first i was worried it was one of those things that has you stare at the screen for a long time. Then a really ugly picture flashes on the screen and there is a loud shriek. I hate those things. :p

Thanks again everybody, that was really very helpful - now I have a pretty good idea of how things will look to everyone, not just on my screen.

Not that anyone gives a crap about this but me... lol... but the average of all of your readings (about 50), was just under 2.1.
