Top FSU WR in legal mess..

.No one will ever accuse Florida State WR Tallman Gardner of lacking a sense of timing! Just 19 days before his football future was to be decided at the 2003 draft, Gardner, a late first day prospect for this year's draft, was arrested in Tallahasse earlier today and charged with two counts one a felony. Gardner was charged with possession of concealed handgun, a felony count, along with a misdemeanor count of marijauna possession.

Bengals mum on Leftwich...

Cincinnati was reportedly one of the teams most interested in seeing Marshall QB Byron Leftwich work out yesterday in Florida. Indeed, the Bengals have put off making a decision on which player to select with the #1 pick at the 2003 draft until they had a chance to check out Leftwich. Bengals' team executives, though, from head coach Marvin Lewis on down have said very little as to how they judged Leftwich's perfrormance. Lewis, however, was not the only head coach in Sarasota yesterday. In fact, in what may be a bit of an indication where Leftwich is ultimately likely to be drafted, the other coaches in attendance were Jack Del Rio of Jacksonville, Carolina' John Fox and Brian Billick of Baltimore, whose teams select 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively. Indeed, Baltimore may have been the best represented organization at the workout with Ravens' GM Ozzie Newsome sitting in along with Billick. Chicago GM Jerry Angelo, along with Tampa Bay's Rich McKay were also in attendance.

Seahawks match Pats offer to RFA DT...

Seahawks match Pats offer to RFA DT...Seattle has matched the offer sheet New England had signed Seahawks' restricted free agent DT Cedric Woodward to earlier this week. If Seattle hadn't matched the Seahawks would have received a 6th round pick as compensation. New England now will reportedly target another restricted free agent DT, Jemaine Haley of Miami; Haley's compensation value is a 7th round pick.

Bears jump on 'ELD' bandwagon...
Chicago became the latest team to publicly join the Kentucky DT Dwayne Robertson fan club. Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com reports that Bears GM Jerry Angelo described Roberston, who has climbed as high as 3rd overall on some published player ratings, as a "great talent" and a "potential impact player, no question." Angelo says he sees Roberston as both explosive and disruptive such that there is "nothing he can't do."

The 2003 draft is now just over two weeks away and which player will be selected first overall remains very much up in the air. Cincinnati will have what are believed to be its top two choices - USC QB Carson Palmer and Kansas State CB Terence Newman - in for visits this weekend in the midst of new head coach Marvin Lewis' first minicamp. Surprisingly, its the also first visit for Palmer to any team. If the Bengals keep him the pick, they are on record as saying that they want to make their selection in the next day or so to give themselves a couple of weeks to sign the player.

The possibility of a trade of the #1 pick is still there, however. While Cincinnati officials scoffed at a rumored deal between Tampa Bay earlier this week involving Buccaneers' DT Warren Sapp for the top pick, when asked about a second rumored deal with Houston which would see the Texans and Bengals flip-flop the first and third picks so Houston could jump ahead of Detroit to grab Michigan State WR Charles Rogers. There are other sources, however, that suggest that the rumblings about a possible Cincinnati-Houston deal are being kept alive by the Bengals themselves who would like to force Detroit to trade up from the #2 spot to get Rogers.

Cetrainly, the Lions appear nervous about the possibility, however, Detroit team exec Matt Millen says simply that the Lions don't have the 'ammo' to move up, although they do have two extra picks, one each in the 5th and 7th rounds.

The Vikings really like Kentucky DT Dewayne Robertson. Minnesota will have to trade up though to get him, since teams like Chicago have also shown an interest in him. They may be able to workout a deal with Houston to move them into the number 3 spot in the draft.

Look for the 49ers to draft a speed receiver on the 1st day of the draft. Some names to keep an eye on are Brandon Lloyd, and Doug Gabriel.

One of the sleepers in this year’s draft is OLB Chaun Thompson who has visited both the Chiefs, and the Browns. Thompson has good size at 6 foot 2 and 224 pounds, and has solid speed 4.4 40-yard dash. One more positive is he can play both inside and outside linebacker. Look for him to go in the 2nd to 4th round area of the draft.

The number one linebacker on the Packers draft board is Oregon State’s Nick Barnett. I think Nick will be available when the Packers pick in the 2nd round, and I also think Green Bay will take Florida QB Rex Grossman in the 1st round.

Talman Gardner was charged with possession of a handgun, and possession of marijuana this week. This could knock Gardner from a 2nd round pick to a 5th round pick.

Hawaii's WLB prospect Pisa Tinoisamoa is a prospect on the rise on many draft boards league wide. The 6'0", 231-pounder could very well be the best coverage LB in this draft. He's got the best feet of any LB in this draft and his instincts are very good reacting well to both the run and pass. A very aggressive player who shows tremendous speed out on the perimeter and just makes plays. Pisa has seen his stock rise over the past few months with a very strong showing at the Senior Bowl, followed by a strong combine workout. It was clear among the NFL brass who met with Pisa in Indy that the young man has been very well-prepared for the mentally draining challenges of the combine and the entire draft process. This is a player who should be a solid second round pick. He has visits to San Diego, Kansas City, Miami, and New England. New Orleans and Indianapolis are also showing alot of interest.

Isn't Pisa Tinoisamoa the nephew of Junior Seau? Wouldn't it be ironic that he took his uncle's job?
