Why are so many so down on our CB's?

I think Greer had a very good season actually. He flat out played tough against TO, and held his own vs. Moss. Can we ask anything more than that?

McGee has been a solid CB for a few years now.

Are either of them top 10? NO. But they are pretty decent overall.

    Last year we were:

15th in pass pts per game
tied for 8th in the league for lowest passing TD's
tied for 10th with most interceptions

Was it our best defensive unit? Maybe

I realize we are talking about a defense that was really bad, but is the secondary one of our biggest areas of need? Im not so sure.

Easy. The Pats go 4 wide and torch us.

      Passing yards allowed: 29th
First downs allowed by passing: 29th
      20-yard passes allowed: 32nd

It'd be nice if they let the Bills' offense get on the field.

I like Greer. He plays hard. That being said, he did not hold his own against Moss. He had 4 TDs IN THE FIRST HALF against us.

McGee alternates between decent and not-so-good. Greer played well for the most part, but can he repeat or improve? We need more quality depth, and if that means a player is brought in to replace one of the current starters and they get bumped to nickle or back-up we'll be better off.

Obvious from our failure on third downs, we need better athletes when the field is spread, across the board.

First off, Moss broke the record for TD's.

Secondly, He did that in ONE game, not both. many plays in that game were to McGees side.

I wouldnt use the Pats as the yard stick for whether we have decent CB's or not.

Our failures on 3rd down were one of our largest problems without a doubt.

However, many of those plays were due to a lack of pass rush (which has been hopefully improved by our inside DL).

I also blame our 13 game starting ILB and Ellison for much of the 3rd down conversions which tended to be shorter than 20 yards.

That said, the cover 2 leaves a big hole in the 10-15 yard range just outside of the middle on bith sides. Again, Poz and Mitchell help us here, as will getting Ko back.

Dont get me wrong, If we land a shut down type CB, I will be very happy about that. But, we have an offense that lost its #2 WR, and has no great TE. Our O hasnt seen any real upgrades yet and were talking about making an early splash at one of our strongest defensive units.

Yep, and it was 16 other teams goal during the year, many of whom are alot better than us.

The arguement your making is that "the world is not enough" because thats what it will take to consistently beat the Pats.

                        Well,

until the Pats suffer major losses on their roster, and/or HC, its unlikely we will invest what it takes to consistently beat them.

So what now? continue to expect the Bills to invest in an all world team and then complain when we dont do it or go around the Pats by winning enough games for the playoffs and taking it from there?

If we just want to make the playoffs, our current DB's might be good enough to do that.

We up graded our D-line and have solid depth. A rotational or situational DE would be nice, but not a top priority. We upgraded our LBs, we have a returning stud, and some depth has emerged. Every offensive skill player outside of one RB and one QB would be considered a reach in the first. And, our passing defense was less average.

Greer would make a sweet nickel. Someone who can match up with the more phsical receivers would be nice.

Our pass rush may have sucked because our coverage was weak.

Our guys don't have to be league worst for CB upgrade to be desired.

Our CBs played better than the stats showed. If we had any type of pass rush, they would look 100% different.

I really dont think we could have asked anymore of our CBs considering how little pressure our DL put on opposing QBs. Even if we had Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson covering we wouldnt have gotten off the field with the way our DL played. Everything starts at the lines.
