Stroud is a bargain compared to Schobel and Kelsay. He is slated to make $5 million this season, and $16.5 million over the next three years. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Stroud is four inches taller and 20 lb. heavier than his predecessor, Tripplett. If he returns to the space-eating, 60-tackle, six-sack man-beast he was for five of seven seasons with the Jaguars, Stroud is a steal.

“I’ve been hurt the past two years and a lot of people have been asking me questions about this ankle,” said Stroud after joining Buffalo. “So I just want to go out and get ready to show everybody I still know how to play ball and do it at a high level. A change of scenery just makes it that much sweeter. Now I’m in a new uniform in a new city. It definitely motivates me that much more to do better.”

Next to Stroud, Johnson and McCargo may split duties at the “three technique,” the tackle who mans up on the opposing guard's outside shoulder.

The Bills will probably give Johnson every chance to win the job – his contract includes $6 million guaranteed. In four seasons with Minnesota, Johnson rarely saw the field as the Vikings’ third defensive tackle behind Pro Bowl twin towers, Kevin Williams (http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=3642942) and Pat Williams (http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=3642948). He had 22 tackles and three sacks last season, occasionally playing defensive end.

How defensive coordinator Perry Fewell utilizes the defensive tackles may dictate the defense. Stroud should demand plenty of attention, which would free up others and keep blockers off of middle linebacker Paul Posluszny. If Stroud’s ankle injury resurfaces, though, Buffalo may be in trouble. On deck for ’08 are LaDainian Tomlinson (http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=3628841), Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson (http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=2987771), Jamal Lewis (http://buf.scout.com/a.z?s=24&p=8&c=1&nid=3035427) and Denver’s zone-blocking scheme, among others.

his predecessor, Tripplett

Tripplett played outside the guard at the 3 tech. Why do people keep saying Stroud is replacing him ? Stroud will be at the 1 tech, over center.

A McCargo/Johnson rotation is fine at the 3 tech but Stroud does need another 2 gapper to back him up. Kyle Williams can't anchor at all and is washed out with ease by the opposing D. We have to turn the page with these marginal talents and get serious.

We could still take a big body DT on Day 2 in the draft to backup Stroud

Apparently not only is Stroud Tripplett's replacement but McCargo has been a solid bust as well. I swear sombody from here wrote this.

Im not mad at McCargo for his marginal production thus far, I'm mad at the FO for reaching for him.

we are gonna draft AT LEAST one dt this draft. it might not be till the 4th, but there are studs that low in the draft every year.

the way our and many other(including the colts, bears, and giants) D's work is they have linemen shooting gaps and disrupting plays. this is very tiring and requires lots of bodies.

don't think of our line or our d as your madden team, where all that matter is the starters and maybe a back up if someone gets hurt. our entire dline get solid playing time every game.

now i feel as the above poster stated that we need and will draft another DT -- prolly a more physical one (doens't have to be a space eater, just a guy who plays with a strong presence).

when you throw mccargo, then johnson (who i'm pretty big on -- it used to amaze me how awesome all the DTs in minni are) at the 3, and stroud, williams, and someone else at the 1, you get a pretty strong and consistend force in the middle.

add in a young kid trying to steal PT from these vets, and moving johnson out to DE (where if we go Denney, mccargo, stroud, johnson on 3rd and short we now have a line that averages close to 3 bills each) and it become much harder to contain our DEs in the pass rush, and IMO poz, mitchell, and crow all show above average quicks and suddeness when going at the passer.

just as losing one or two key guys (phat pat for example) can destroy your line, adding the same couple of key guys can really improve it -- especially if you use an aggressive rotation like we do.
