I guess I'm not the only one that thinks Schobel is a waste.
"On the other end of the spectrum, though, one has to wonder about Buffalo's other starting defensive end, two-time Pro Bowler Aaron Schobel. Last offseason, the seven-year veteran was reportedly unhappy about the contract he had at the time -- a three-year, $21 million accord -- so the franchise misguidedly gave him a new deal worth $50.5 million over seven campaigns, making Schobel the highest-paid athlete in Buffalo sports history.
Schobel signed his enormous contract last August, then responded with a pedestrian season that included a mere 6.5 sacks. That was a highly disappointing follow-up to Schobel's 14.5-sack season the year previous. Still, the 2001 second-round pick from TCU made it to his second straight Pro Bowl, despite the fact his sack total decreased by more than half from 2006 to '07 and he was subpar against the run.
Given his performance in 2007 -- and it wasn't good for the money the Bills gave Schobel -- it's valid to question why the 30-year-old isn't in Buffalo right now with some of his other teammates, including Kelsay. Although workouts are voluntary at the moment, Schobel could have slightly repaid the franchise that made his bank account enormous by showing up to work and sending a positive message to his teammates.
Instead, though, Schobel has so far chosen to keep his distance. If he doesn't make an appearance within the next week, then he'd better show himself on the field in 2008.
Otherwise, a contract that has looked unjustified to this point will seem even worse next offseason."
