‘Utter shock ... Not Heath’

Former teammates and coaches of the Newberry College star come to grips with sudden loss

Heath Benedict was dead. He had passed in his Jacksonville, Fla., home sometime earlier that evening. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office found no signs of struggle, no signs of drugs, alcohol or foul play. Simply, they found a man who had fallen asleep on his couch, under a blanket, never to awaken.

I think he showed enough promise to go in the 3rd. It's too bad. He probably had a promising future...

Heath Benedict, a two-time Little All-American offensive lineman from Newberry College in South Carolina, was found dead on a couch in his home.

Benedict is the son of former Youngsville (PA) High School state-champion triple-jumper Ed Benedict, though he was not raised in the area.

Benedict took part in the Senior Bowl in January, the first Division II player to do so since 2004, and was invited to last month’s NFL combine.
