As the draft approaches, keep a close eye on the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens. Word is that both teams are trying to move up in round one of the draft.
We're hearing that the Ravens have designs on Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich. Because they fear that Byron will be scooped up before Baltimore exercises the tenth overall pick, the Ravens could try to move as high as number four to get in place to snag Leftwich.
The Jets, in contrast, find themselves in the exact position that the Redskins occupied before the 'Skins scalped the Jets for receiver Laveranues Coles. A month ago, there were multiple reports that the Redskins were dangling cornerback Fred Smoot and the 13th overall pick in exchange for the chance to get high enough to draft either Charles Rogers or Andre Johnson.
Now that Coles is in D.C., the Jets hold the 13 hole -- and the word is that they're making inquiries about a move north. Specifically, we're hearing that they've been talking extensively with the Bears about moving into the four spot.
Unlike the 'Skins, the Jets have two first-rounders (13 and 22), which could also be attractive to a team like the Texans, who sit at number 3. At 13, the Texans could draft versatile offensive lineman Eric Steinbach and, at 22, they could take a chance on Miami running back Willis McGahee (who visited Houston this week and who previously was at the top of the Texans' wish list, prior to his injury).
Actually, the Jets probably need to go as high to No. 3 in order to ensure a crack at Johnson. If the Texans don't leapfrog the Lions for Charles Rogers, Houston likely will pluck Johnson off of the board.
