A league source tells us that Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil is growingly increasingly frustrated with the failure of G.M. Carl Peterson and Executive VP/Assistant G.M. Denny Thum to pull the trigger on certain second-tier and third-tier free agents.
According to the source, Vermeil has complained privately about the failure of Peterson and Thum to come to the table with bona fide offers for players whom Vermeil wanted to sign.
We're hearing that Peterson, in turn, is deflecting the blame to Thum, who's primarily responsible for contract negotiations.
Vermeil is entering the final year of his contract, and he already has dropped hints that this could be his last season in coaching. In our view, this is one of those issues that, in the end, could influence Vermeil to move on after 2003.
