With everyone talking about Hair or possible rules changes, I believe that Commissioner Roger Goodell in his address wanted everyone to understand that the “Economy” of the NFL should be foremost in their thinking.

The Commish said when talking of the “Economy” of the NFL, “What the (NFL’s economy) does is demonstrate the risks that are in the marketplace right now. When you shrink the margins by increased player costs and other increased costs, at some point in time the economics become untenable”.

The Commish talked about the following financial topics extensively:

-- The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) - Passed in March of 2006. The NFL or NFLPA could opt out the deal in the next year and many owners were talking about “how” bad the deal was for them. Could labor unrest enter the NFL for the first time since 1987 with labor problems looming in 2011?

-- The Salary Cap - $116 million this year with a scheduled “uncapped” year in 2010. BTW: Payrolls have risen $30 million in the past two years.

-- The NFL’s Debt – It was reported at the meetings that the NFL is 9 Billion dollars in debt. That figure needs to be looked into at a time when the league’s NFL Network is losing money -- while they are still encouraged/funding it, the spending of millions in building the league’s many new stadiums/palaces at low-interest loan prices with little chance for revenues, small market teams like the Buffalo Bills hurting (enough to go to Canada for dollars) and we all know something is brewing at NFL Films. And can someone give me a straight answer on how all this debt is possible when the NFL is by far the most popular game in the world in terms of attendance, merchandising, ticket sales, and television dollars.

The NFL has no one to blame but themselves for putting small market teams in peril and for the other general mess. Poor mgmt. and forward thinking.

Just 3 years ago, the cap was 82 Mil and that should have been it for the next 4-5 years. But Noooooooooooooooooooooooo...

They passed a terrible CBA and now want to point the finger at everyone but themselves, with a current 116 Mil cap and high expenses.

A big round of applause for Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder, Bob Kraft and all the other supreme forward thinkers of the NFL. :bf1:

A CBA which gives the players 59.5% of gross revenues is insane.

Putting yourself collectively in debt by $9 Billion to finance palacial new stadiums and pay astronomical purchase prices and new franchise fees is absolutely stupid.

And a 41% increase in the salary cap over just 3 years is almost suicidal.

Turns out Ralph might be the most economically astute owner out there.

".. But if Ralph would just sell the naming rights to the stadium, all of this would go away ! "

Yeah, that would solve all of our problems, no doubt.

I love when the guys who led to this finally start getting the blame. What made this league what it was, is major revenue sharing. Making sure all the teams share the wealth evenly. Then the rich greedy businessmen like Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft came in and thought there way was better. The truth is, their league could make them money, but not as much as the current way, plus you would have to cut the league in half and keep only the rich, big market cities and they can make the big bucks and keep it all for themselves. However, you will then lose the die hard, major fan support from the other half of the NFL you get rid of. Plus their dollars too. Again, I don't understand...why would you **** up what worked? :ill:

Oh and don't even get me started on the NFL Network. That's a joke and they are losing money on it, because no one wants to pay the crazy amount of money that it would cost to broadcast. I don't blame the cable companies. If they lowered their demand or let it go on the sports packages, the cable companies would jump at it and the viewership would increase.

The league was stupid and everyone on this board saw this coming.

However, letting Ralph get a free pass on this isn't fair either. There are alot more things he could be doing to make sure the Bills stay in Buffalo. The naming rights is one issue on a list of many so be fair when you bring that up.

Naming rights to the stadium is peanuts in WNY. Probably couldn't break even after all the signage is switched over.

Naming rights is 1 issue.

Ralph keeps complaining about revenue but he is in the top 15 for net income every year. He might even be in the top 10. So what is he complaining about?

He's taking home more than most owners so his argument is BS.
