Seau headed to Miami for visit, maybe for good

MIAMI (April 14, 2003 9:48 p.m. EDT) - Linebacker Junior Seau paved the way for a probable trade to the Miami Dolphins when he agreed Monday to have his contract with the San Diego Chargers restructured.

A 12-time Pro Bowl selection, Seau will fly this week from California to Florida for a physical and further discussions with the Dolphins, probably on Wednesday, said his agent, Marvin Demoff.

The Chargers last month gave the 34-year-old Seau permission to seek a trade. Miami is his first choice, Demoff said.

Seau's contract was restructured to address a $2.7 million bonus he was due to receive Tuesday. Demoff declined to discuss details of the revised contract, which runs through 2005, but said it won't be a hurdle to the Dolphins making the trade.

Passing Dolphins' physical key to possible deal

Junior Seau made an adjustment in his contract that may help facilitate a trade later this week with the Miami Dolphins.

Details of the adjustment weren't immediately available Monday night, but it could be just as simple as pushing back the date of a $2.7 million roster bonus that was scheduled to be paid to him by the Chargers April 15. Though a trade was not completed, Seau was scheduled to sign the paperwork Monday night and fly to Miami for a physical.

"[Seau] doesn't want to get ahead of himself,'' Seau's agent Marvin Demoff said. "He'd like to wind up at Miami. This is a big step toward it.''
