In the wake of a rocky offseason, which was highlighted by an unprecedented free-agent raid on the roster committed by the Redskins, a league source tells us that Jets owner Woody Johnson is very unhappy with the performance of his front office.

According to the source, coach Herm Edwards believes that he will regain some authority over personnel, following the clusterfudge that resulted in the loss of restricted free agents Laveranues Coles and Chad Morton.

Meanwhile, G.M. Terry Bradway and assistant G.M. Mike Tannenbaum are said to be on wafer-thin ice. We hear that the upcoming season will be crucial to their long-term prospects.

Around the league, the word is that Tannenbaum's once-shooting star has fizzled, for now. In early 2002, Tannenbaum was slated to take over for Rich McKay as the G.M. in Tampa, which would have coincided with Bill Parcells' arrival as coach. Given the criticism heaped on Tannenbaum in the wake of the bungled arbitration hearing regarding the Chad Morton offer sheet, it could be a while before Tannenbaum is once again on the cusp of a G.M. gig.

In 2001, Edwards had usurped some of Bradway and company's authority, primarily by failing to use guys that Bradway's bunch had signed. Eventually, the front office began deferring to Edwards on matters of personnel.

By 2002, the pendulum swung back to Bradway, and he was thought to be firmly in charge of the roster as the 2003 offseason commenced.

Thanks to the Redskins' penchant for buying players, Edwards could be back in the driver's seat, soon.
