As the recently named chief operating officer and de facto general manager of the Bills, Brandon will oversee his first NFL draft a week from Saturday. And he will employ the same strategy the Bills have used the past two years in hopes of choosing players to help Buffalo end its eight-year playoff drought. Coach Dick Jauron, college scouting director Tom Modrak, Wilson and Brandon will all have their say when Buffalo is on the clock.

"We've always had a consensus-type atmosphere in the room," Brandon was saying from the media room at One Bills Drive the other day. "We all sit and we debate and we go through the process and we make a decision that's in the best interest of the organization. There's a lot of dialogue. We take a lot of input from the coaches who put a lot of time in. Mr. Wilson, Tom, the scouts. We go through the process in a very systematic form and we've had success doing it that way."

"If you see what we've done the last few years in the draft, we've had plenty of guys come in and contribute early," Brandon says. "You saw what happened with the Giants last year, going on to the Super Bowl championship with eight draft picks that contributed. It's a day and age in pro football where kids need to come in and play young, and we're hoping to have the success we've had over the last few years."
