PFW: Bills looking to ride starting DT hard

    April 25, 2008
Bills looking to ride starting DT tandem hard

Given the physical toll that D-line play takes on players, most good defensive fronts have a healthy rotation of players coming in and out of the lineup. The way we hear it, the Bills will be looking to buck the theory that a steady rotation is the most effective method, particularly on the interior. According to a team insider, Buffalo envisions DTs John McCargo and ex-Jaguar Marcus Stroud assuming the heavy majority of minutes in 2008. Although technically a reserve in ’07 , McCargo showed enough glimpses of greatness to make coach Dick Jauron confident he’ll be the force the team believed he’d become when they plucked him in the first round of the 2006 draft. Stroud’s lack of consistency and health have some wondering whether he’s best-suited for a part-time role, but evidently that concern isn’t shared by Jauron. McCargo and Stroud are easily the best run-supporting and pass-rushing tackles the Bills boast, so there’s no need to give them any more rest than is needed to keep them operating at a high level.

I think McCargo, in his 3rd year, will finally play like a 1st round pick. He was real good toward the end of last season.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

I think Spencer will be a very pleasant surprise .

I'm still pissed we missed out Darwin Walker.

McCargo is definitely an up and coming beast who still hasn't realized his true potential, and even though we aren't getting the Stroud of 3 years ago - he's still good enough to command double teams consistently and will free up Schobel and other dlinemen to make plays. Not to mention he's 10x the player Triplett is.

One DE to help coming in at 11th in the draft.

I'm surprised considering Kollar loves a deep rotation on the line. I can't believe Dick is looking to ride starting DT tandem hard.

              Skoobs, at least you're consistent.

Spencer Johnson is a true wildcard in all of this - this kid was a steal IMO and assuming that McCargo/Stroud stay healthy and live up to billing then we are all of a sudden going to be one of the deepest teams in terms of DT play.

Also knowing how much The Corpse covets massive slobs that can clog the middle and make plays don't be surprised if we take another DT on day one in the draft, especially if we trade down and get an extra 2nd rounder.

I don't believe the report for one second. Stroud is almost 30 and coming off an ankle injury, and they're paying pretty big bucks to Johnson. I see a nice rotation occurring with possibly Denney moving inside again on obvious passing downs.
