The Buffalo Bills hope they made themselves a little more competitive with the New England Patriots on Saturday.

The Bills filled a big need by drafting Troy University cornerback Leodis McKelvin with the 11th overall pick. He gives them another weapon in the defensive backfield to contend with the Patriots’ passing offense, which is the best in the NFL.

Then they filled their big offensive need by drafting Indiana receiver James Hardy in the second round. At 6-foot-6 and 217 pounds, Hardy is the biggest receiver ever drafted by the Bills. They hope he gives their 30th-ranked offense a chance to finally compete with the beasts of the AFC East, who have beaten Buffalo 14 of the last 15 meetings.

“Personally, for me, I’m really pleased,” said Bills coach Dick Jauron. “It’s a relief in terms of the draft because these are two critical positions on any football team, and on ours they were two critical needs. Now we go into the second day of the draft a little more open, a little more at ease.”
