Seems they've drafted him with the hopes that he can become a short-yard specalist.

Guess that even though Lynch is one hell of a runner and a tough SOB, the organization wasn't that confident in him after watching tape last year that he excels in short-yardage situations. personally it would help if the OL run blocked better and the entire stadium didn't know what was coming, but I digress.

Anywho, though I know very, very little about Odom personally, from what I"ve gathered and read he's a really tough runner in between the tackles.

When I asked the guy for a player and role to compare him too, he said that he is a shorter Brandon Jacobs. Many will remember while Tiki Barber was the featured back in NY, Jacobs was their short yard specialist.

So assuming the team drafted him specificaly for this kind of role, at the 6th round it could turn out to be a really solid value pick.

Lynch being the featured back, Jackson giving him a blow a few times a game and being used on sure passing downs more, and Odom as the short-yardage specialist.

Like it.

If we're in close and Lynch needs a rest, we have no reliable power backs. I thought Wright would be better than he is the way draft gurus talked about him being a steal for us. Hopefully, Oman can fill that void.

I know we're referring to short-yardage everywhere on the field, but let's just talk about the redzone (the worst part of our bad offense last year).

Running problems in the red zone last year can be blamed on the following:

1. Play-calling;
2. Teams loading box because there is no WR red zone target;
3. Play-calling;
4. No dual threat TE to keep the covering safety or LB on his heels;
5. Play-calling;
6. No true FB to run ISO and clear the first fill-LB.
7. Play-calling

Improve the above issues and Marshawn Lynch will have no problem getting into the endzone.

For the record, I believe the actual correct spelling of Xavier's last name is "O-m-o-n."

I have a hard time believing Lynch will be replaced during the game as much as he was last year. The guy is a gamer and needs the ball, especially on 3rd downs when we throw into the flats. Fairchild was a complete idiot and had no clue how to utilize such a dynamic player as Lynch.

I want to know who the hell you talked to that kept calling him Odom? Or did you just not pickup on him calling him Oman?

short yardage runs add up to not that many yards but a ton of big hits and wear and tear. it makes big times sense to have more than one guy doing it. lynch has the potential to be an all around game breaker, we don't want to get him badly dinged up falling forward for a yard when some 7th round pick can do it just the same.

I have no idea why people think Xavier is a short yardage back...

I think those who do need to go watch som efilm on him

I think those who do need to go watch som efilm on himI think he is a solid all around guy, with a very diverse game. Much like Lynch, just bigger. I also think that he isn't only a short yardage back, but he could excel in that role.

Omon doesn't have the breakaway speed that Lynch and Jackson have. If those to guys need a breather, Omon could certainly come in at other times and in other situations, but generally you want Omon to do things that maybe Lynch and Jackson aren't as good at or their skills aren't needed.
