  • 2009 draft: Year of the TE?

Whilst I am not one to normally give the front office the benefit of the doubt, especially after their Day2 performance, I will now admit that they might have known something, especially when not moving up for Martellus Bennett and even more so, Martin Rucker who cost the Browns at 2009 pick.

Every Championship and Super Bowl winning team has a decent TE option. Even without their starters, the Patriots and Giants were able to field two Tight Ends in David Thomas and Kevin Boss who would start with us.

However every draft year seems to have incredible depth at certain positions and the 2009 draft is looking exceptional at Tight End. Some pundits are suggesting that there could be as many as four Tight Ends possibly going in Round 1.

    Amongst the seniors are:

    Chase Coffman, Missouri (6ft6, 245lbs, running a 4.75)
    Ryan Purvis, Boston College (6ft4, 260lbs, 4.76)
    Cornelius Ingram, Florida (6ft4, 230lbs, 4.58)
    Travis Beckum, Wisconsin (6ft4, 221lbs, 4.60)
    Shawn Nelson, Southern Miss (6ft5, 238lbs, 4.66)
    Logan Paulsen, UCLA, (6ft6, 250lbs, 4.72)
    Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma St (6ft6, 260lbs, 4.70)
    Anthony Hill, NC State, (6ft6, 265lbs, 4.78)
    Rory Nicol, Ohio St (6ft5, 250lbs, 4.74)
    Brandon Ledbetter, Western Michigan (6ft5, 230lbs, 4.71)

    And the juniors

    Anthony Quarless, Penn St (6ft5, 252lbs, 4.60)
    Scott Sicko, New Hampshire (6ft3, 242lbs, 4.65)
    Jermaine Gresham, Oklahoma (6ft6, 255lbs, 4.60)

In my opinion, there is no way we’ll not be able to significantly upgrade at TE with at least one selection and hopefully two. A Day1 and a Day2 pick please.

I think Coiner made the point... they arent looking for a pass receiving TE, they want a guy that can do it all, but block first. Those just arent out there as much. And with the rest of the league seeming to pick receiving TE's first, that why we are picking them later.

Unfortunately we don't seem to have guys who can do it all. At least some of this class are multi-purpose

Next year the two areas that Buffalo failed to address, TE and C are said to be very strong where they were very weak this year.
I've made up my mind. Don't confuse me with the facts.

I'm the most reasonable poster here. If you don't agree, I'll be forced to have a hissy fit.

Travis Beckum would be awesome if he can get up to 240 and not lose that receiving ability.

espn.com had an early 2009 mock draft the other day and had us taking Travis Beckum with our first round pick. I think they projected us to be picking 17th.
