The Toronto Maple Leafs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/clubhouse?team=tor) have fired coach Paul Maurice, according to media outlets in Canada.
Maurice, who had one year remaining on a three-year contract, failed to guide the Leafs to the playoffs in his two seasons. The Maple Leafs have missed the Stanley Cup playoffs in three consecutive seasons -- the first time that has happened since 1928.

oh, the joys of being a Buffalo sports fan. When we can't be proud of our own accomplishments, at least we can point and laugh at rivals who are in worse shape than we are!

Crazy decision.

Maurice's hands have been tied by incompetence from above ever since he landed in Toronto. The Leafs skaters were playoff caliber in 06/07 but Raycroft's amazing ability to throw the puck into his own goal cost them dear, and this season was just a horror show with mis-management from the GM leaving Maurice with no room to manoeuvre when players went out injured.

Everyone knows that the Leafs will only see real improvement when MLSE start getting hit in the pocket by fans staying away and have to produce a quality product on the ice. The fact that the ACC is constantly packed by people cheering on a team that sucks means that MLSE is making money and so won't do anything to fix the team.
