Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have agreed to terms with forward Felix Schutz (pronounced SHOOT-z), who played last season with ERC Ingolstadt of the German Elite League. The Sabres selected Schutz in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 2006 Entry Draft.

Schutz (11/3/1987, 5’11”, 192 lbs.) was eighth in team scoring with 25 points (12+13) and 76 PIMs in 46 games last season, and was named the league’s Rookie of the Year. He was also the youngest player on ERC Ingolstadt.

“Felix is a great competitor who plays at a high skill level,” said Regier. “His experience in both the QMJHL and German Elite League last season has rounded his game perfectly for the professional level.”

A native of Erding, Germany, Schutz spent two seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) prior to returning home to play in the German Elite League. From 2005-07, Schutz scored 96 points (40+56) in 110 games with the Saint John Sea Dogs and Val D’Or Foreurs. Schutz also has international hockey experience, having represented Germany in the 2007 World Junior Championships and 2007 World Championships.

doesn't matter who- they spent a draft pick on him and now they have him in the system developing. The Sabres have gone to the well a lot lately and it's almost dry- getting guys like Schutz and Gerbe in the system is a great start.

I'll give him a hint from his own post. Let's see if he passes the test.

???

He played two years in the Q and then went back to Germany. He is a very good prospect. I would equate him with Zednik in stature and ability.

History
Schutz is one of few Germans to be playing in the Canadian Hockey League, and was one of the best, though he did not get much exposure, playing for the expansion Saint John Sea Dogs on Canada’s east coast. Schutz was selected 41st overall in the 2005 Import Draft. He showed great talent for the young and inexperienced squad, posting 52 points in 65 games, leading the team in assists and points, and finishing second in goals. He was also a member of Germany’s World Junior squad, playing in the first division, where he picked up four points in five games.

October 2006 Q&A with Schutz

Talent Analysis
Schutz is a slick skater with great playmaking ability. He will dispense the puck more regularly than shooting, but his shot is quick and accurate. He also brings a fairly hard-nosed style of play, working hard in the corners and mixing it up physically if need be. A big-time sleeper due to his relative obscurity during the season, Schutz has the potential to be a second or third liner, and will be a big factor for next season’s ever-improving Sea Dogs squad.

This is good news for the farm system. I'm excited to see what the new farm team will look like. Anybody know anything about Enroth? Can/Will he sign soon?

BTW, the Portland Pirates are currently up 3-2 in the Atlantic Division Final of the Calder Cup Playoffs. So remind me again why the fans should be so thrilled to lose their current NHL team. :::

Isn't that the role of a minor league team, to provide the NHL team with players?

That is the point of a minor league team Mikey. What the hell is the point of having one if they can't move up the big league?
