Bills 8th in rookie pool money

According to ESPN's John Clayton the Bills sit eighth in rookie pool money allotted for them to spend on their 10 draft choices and undrafted rookies, of which Buffalo currently has 8. The amount is $5,351,820. The rookie pool is essentially a cap within a cap providing a financial ceiling for the rookies on a team's roster. Only the first year of each rookie's contract factors into the figure. As Clayton mentions there are ways around the rookie cap like contract escalators based on performance and second-year roster bonuses, the rookie pool at least to some degree provides a structure of how much money goes to a rookie based on where they were drafted. ---

I hate this. I wish the NFL had the foresight to bite this in the but long before it got out of hand like this.

They should have setup a rookie salary structure a long time ago starting with the #1 pick making a shade less than veteran minimum in a three year rookie contract. Load up the contracts with incentives based on performance and make sure that the drafting team had exclusive rights to re-sign that player at the end of three years.

Instead, we find the highest paid offensive lineman to be a man who has yet to even attend training camp, never mind paying his dues, gaining experience, and proving his worth.

They say "it's all about the business". Bullpucky. If "real" business operated like this, can you imagine what it would be like? First year lawyers and accountants making more money than the respective firm partners? Never happen.
