Bruuuuuce to be named to Wall.

Bruce Smith will become the 25th member of the Buffalo Bills’ Wall of Fame at Ralph Wilson Stadium this fall.

The induction of the Bills’ all-time great defensive end comes five years after his playing career ended and could be a prelude to the biggest individual honor in football.

Smith will be among the favorites for induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility when the next vote is held in February 2009.

Smith holds the NFL record for quarterback sacks with 200, 171 of which he recorded in a 15- year career with the Bills from 1985 to ’99.

Smith said he got the news of his induction from Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. while on vacation last week in the Caribbean.

“I heard from Ralph while I was in St. Kitts having my golf tournament,” Smith said by phone from Virginia Beach, Va. “I have an annual golf tournament there and a bunch of the guys come to it. . . . It was a blessing. To hear his voice and to know that honor will happen, I’m quite excited about it.”

Re: Bills’ Wall clears a spot for Bruce

Smith, colorful and controversial during his 19-year NFL career, will be enshrined during a halftime ceremony of a game to be decided this fall.

It's the eighth consecutive year a member of Buffalo's four Super Bowl teams from the early 1990s will be honored. Smith follows Jim Kelly, Kent Hull, Darryl Talley, Jim Ritcher, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and Steve Tasker.

For Smith, the halls of fame floodgates have swung wide open.

In 2005, the man once named among the 100 greatest football players of all-time by The Sporting News, was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2006 the College Football Hall of Fame and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

After the Bills' Wall of Fame ceremony, Bruce's next appearance on the stage for legends will surely be in Canton, Ohio. February 2009 marks his first-year of eligibility for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and many voters have indicated they will make him a first-year ballot inductee.

While Canton is every player's ultimate goal, Smith and his Buffalo teammates from 1985-1999 hold their name being placed on the facade of Ralph Wilson Stadium in high regard for personal reasons.

Smith, whose speed and quickness put fear into left tackles and quarterbacks, was the defensive linchpin on Buffalo teams that compiled a 135-78 overall record between 1988-99 and made the playoffs 10 times in those 12 seasons.

LOL - Only if it will get him out of some training camp time.

Nah, probably he'll just fall asleep under a traffic light on the way there.

A much better player than a person.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?
