Huge payday brings Jaguars RB Taylor back to workouts

RB Fred Taylor, who once compared his contract to a Kmart blue-light special, sat out the first five days of the team’s voluntary offseason workout program at ALLTEL Stadium, but returned after ironing out a new four-year, incentive-laden extension that included a $8 million signing bonus. Because Taylor missed 24 of a possible 64 regular-season games with various injuries prior to playing all 16 games last season, the Jaguars took steps to minimize the risk of the contract, awarding a $40,000 bonus — payable at the end of each season — for every game that he plays. He also can earn $140,000 for each season in which he rushes for more than 1,000 yards. What’s unusual is that the new contract hardly reduced Taylor’s cap number of $3.59 million. The team could be expecting more room to come with an extension for QB Mark Brunell, who has a cap figure of $8.75 million and who we hear is targeted next for renegotiation.
