NFL to add 17th game?

This would be great news. The Bills could have their 8 regular home/away games and still keep the 1 game in Toronto. There is no reason to play 4 pre-season games.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell raised the possibility of having a 17th regular-season game as an option to help settle some of the league's future labor problems.

A 17th regular-season game could replace a fourth preseason game and the possibility comes at a time that the league is not satisfied with the quality of the preseason. The league made a presentation to owners about ways to improve the current preseason Tuesday.

Losing some preaseason games is a good idea. Making one into an extra regular season game is a great idea!

What they could do is make the extra game an International Game.

This year you already have the Bills playing the Fins in Toronto and the Chargers/Saints matchup in London, why not keep the idea going and let all the teams play 8 home games, 8 road games and one game somewhere outside the US.

They would need 16 international venues for that, which is doable.

What they could do is make the extra game an International Game.

This year you already have the Bills playing the Fins in Toronto and the Chargers/Saints matchup in London, why not keep the idea going and let all the teams play 8 home games, 8 road games and one game somewhere outside the US.

That would be quite interesting....or maybe even do in non-NFL cities in the teams area utilizing college stadiums or baseball fields. Examples;

My only problem is the extra wear and tear on the players. At the end of the year, these guys are pretty beat up already. Would an extra regular season game just be too much for the players?

A four game preseason is pretty silly and isn't needed, but I know the NFL can't bear to think about losing any revenue.

One extra game is too much for the players? Nah. Plenty of teams already play extra ones, they're called the playoffs. We tend to forget about them as Bills fans.....

easy solution to Dujek plan make opening weekend the International game for all teams, then give teams 2 weeks offto recover from travel etc to start their non international schedule so opening weekend would be like last Sunday in August and Week 2 would be the Second Sunday in September

It's certainly worth it to the owners to consider putting this on the table in the upcoming CBA talks. The players don't have to play any more games. The only difference is that one that doesn't count now would count. I imagine the rationale is that if it counts fans won't skip it so revenue will go up. The owners could reduce slightly the percentage that goes to players, but the players wouldn't have to sacrifice.

One potential fly in the ointment. If the number of preseason games is reduced by one, will coaches now make the second preseason game the one in which they play starters for over a half, and the third game becomes the one where starters don't play at all and scrubs are on the field for most of the game? If that's the case, teams may not experience much in the way of a revenue increase, and everyone will quickly turn grumpy. Look for the players to ask for guarantees in CBA negotiations.

That weekend (last weekend in August) is a Bank/Public holiday in most of Europe as well, which would probably be where the bulk of the games would be played.
