(April 18, 2003 11:57 a.m. EDT) - Time was on their side. Mike Holmgren and his personnel department didn't have to win right away. The Seattle Seahawks would build a contender over time, mostly through the draft.

Four years later, time is up.

Holmgren secured a fifth season as head coach only by stepping aside as general manager. Revamping the defensive coaching staff was another prerequisite for his continued employment.

The message seemed clear: Deliver a winner in 2003 or face termination.

Now, eight days before the NFL draft, the urgency at Seahawks headquarters is understandable. Free agency proved mostly fruitless, upping the ante by leaving the NFL's 28th-ranked defense mostly unchanged in terms of personnel. Seattle still needs a run-stuffing defensive tackle in the worst way.
