Evaluating a quarterback always is difficult, but it's even more challenging when the beautiful swan of a passer was an ugly duckling not long ago.

At times during his career, he had become a target for critical fans and media commentators. If Palmer had declared early for the draft last year, the consensus in scouting circles was that he would have been a third-round pick.
