    Coming to grips with the right QB

    Evaluating a quarterback always is difficult, but it's even more challenging when the beautiful swan of a passer was an ugly duckling not long ago.

    Accordingly, some teams are leery of Carson Palmer and Kyle Boller, even though they are the No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks on many draft boards.

    Before his senior season at Southern California, Palmer had thrown as many interceptions (39) as touchdown passes. He tied the school season record with 18 picks in 2000 and never showed much command of former coach Paul Hackett's West Coast offense. At times during his career, he had become a target for critical fans and media commentators. If Palmer had declared early for the draft last year, the consensus in scouting circles was that he would have been a third-round pick.
