Take a look at the 1st round picks of the Detroit Red Wings. In that time the Wings have won 4 cups, 6 President Trophies and haven't missed the playoffs. Would somebody like to remind me about the importance of 1st round picks in the NHL and the draft in general??

1992: Curtis Bowen (22nd overall)
1993: Anders Eriksson (22nd overall)
1994: Yan Golubovsky (23rd overall)
1995: Maxim Kuznetsov (26th overall)
1996: Jesse Wallin (26th overall)
1997: None
1998: Jiří Fischer (25th overall)
1999: None
2000: Niklas Kronwall (29th overall)
2001: None
2002: None
2003: None
2004: None
2005: Jakub Kindl (19th overall)
2006: None
2007: Brendan Smith (27th overall)

Fisher and Kronwall are about the only players that ever did much on that list.

Are you going to look at more than one team and one set of data to make a conclusion?

I'm going to look at the most dominant team in the NHL over the last 12 years. :::

Using one data point, Mr. Scientist???

While I agree that they are the most dominant, you prove one point. Besides, many people say that one of the best uses of the draft is in trades.

You are also using the data from previous seasons when there was no cap, FA two years later and a much different landscape in the NHL.

I do not believe any of those picks were traded. Obviously in some years they used the picks to get other players. I have no problem using the draft that way. I've said for years trade away as many picks as you need to in order to get proven talent, draft 2 or 3 players a year if you need to and stick them in the minors along with a lot of has beens and cast offs.

Dr. Lecter

Obviously many of them were traded as they had no pick some of those years. So they were traded or used to sign a FA.

Again, the landscape has changed with the cap and earlier FA. Much like the NFL, the draft will be very important.

Would you rather be sitting in the Red Wings position or the Sabres? 4 Cups in 11 years - I'd take the Wings.

I agree with that premise.

Actually, I think most of their players are their draft picks, at least their better players, they just decide to draft great in the middle of the draft.

Not trying to argue that the NHL draft is a crapshoot, but it does matter:

Pavel Datsyuk - picked in the 6th round
Valtteri Filppula - 3rd round
Johan Franzen - 3rd round
Henrik Zetterberg - 7th round
Tomas Holmstrom - 1st round
Niklas Kronwall - 1st round
Niklas Lidstrom - 1st round

I think you would see that on most teams. They don't have a superstar that was picked up in free agency, well with the exception of Hasek.

Ebenezer

I agree with that premise.
and in the three years since the cap was imposed they have won a Stanley Cup, won a president's trophy, runner up in the president's trophy and three division titles. Their only major FA is Zetterberg.

Yeah, I'd say Datsyuk in the 6th and Zetterberg in the 7th were nice steals

Never said it didn't matter...just trying to make the point that people shouldn't get a woody because the Sabres are signing all their picks and that the draft is the end all be all. The NHL draft with the exception of a few, is at best - a crap shoot.

Also, it is very hard to tell where foreign players should place in the draft and how well they will actually do in the NHL.

I am not sure I have ever heard anyone say that the draft is the end all be all, but in the league these days you better draft well get youth to contribute early if you want to win.

The draft is certainly much more of a crap shoot than, say, the NFL. Hockey players are drafted when they're 18 ... it's harder to predict what they'll do at that age. They're drafted from different continents, different cultures. In any given draft, it's safe to say at least half the picks will never see the NHL, and the ones who do and become good players are as likely to come from the fifth round (such as Miller) as from the first. Or so it seems.
Look at a couple of the Sabres' recent drafts:
2002
1. Keith Ballard
1. Daniel Paille
3. Michael Tessier
3. John Adams
4. Jakub Hulva
4. Marty Magers
6. Maxim Schevjev
7. Radoslav Hecl
8. Dennis Wideman
9. Martin Cizek
2000
1. Artem Kryukov
2. Gerard Dicaire
4. Ghyslain Rousseau
5. Denis Denisov
7. Vasily Bizyayev
7. Paul Gaustad
8. Sean McMorrow
9. Ryan Courtney

Why did they even bother showing up??

they could have picked Paille and traded the rest for a guy to two and won a cup.

They could have traded the rest for a fax machine and a camcorder and got good value.

I don't get the point of the thread. Look at Pittsburgh. Obviously the draft does matter. Detroit has been dominant because they can do a complete draft, not just the first round, much like teams in other sports that are good.

We're allowed to get excited. The Sabres are going to have a new farm team all to themselves and they are stocking it with tons of fresh talent that in a season or two could have a major impact on the Sabres.

Since 1991, a list of all draft choices that made it to the NHL. Your argument holds little water if you include rounds 2-whatever in your argument.

they could have picked Paille and traded the rest for a guy to two and won a cup.

Paille is great and Ballard was used to get Drury. Pretty impressive on the whole. Wideman didn't sign but is a good defenseman in the NHL.

Can't argue 2000 draft, other than Gaustad, horrible.

Paille "great"? Let's not go overboard.

Drury is gone with nothing in return.

I don't see how someone can get "excited" over a player who's never played in the NHL.
Intrigued, maybe. Wait and see. But to be excited over unknowns is just as presumptuous as predicting they'll be busts. I need a good reason to be excited.

I'm excited about the concept of a farm system that is all Sabres. I'm excited that they are stocking it with young players that have been good so far. I'm excited that we won't have depleted depth anymore.

It's not as much the players, but the concept of re-stocking the talent that has me excited.

Would I be considered a wagon hopper if I started following Portland much more next season?

Not trying to argue that the NHL draft is a crapshoot, but it does matter:

Pavel Datsyuk - picked in the 6th round
Valtteri Filppula - 3rd round
Johan Franzen - 3rd round
Henrik Zetterberg - 7th round
Tomas Holmstrom - 1st round
Niklas Kronwall - 1st round
Niklas Lidstrom - 1st round

I think you would see that on most teams. They don't have a superstar that was picked up in free agency, well with the exception of Hasek.

Lidstrom was 3rd round.

Re-stocking talent is the process, and always has been in all organized sports. The alternative is the franchise literally runs out pf players. It's the most basic, fundamental function of a team, which every team does, including the worst ones.
It's like getting excited over the Zamboni.

After seeing how depleted their depth was last season I'm excited to see it be re-stocked.

And Zamboni's a cool.

Eb conveiiently leaves out that they had Steve Yzerman, a top pick, for most of those cups

Actually, most of the players on their team that did the bulk of the winning were top draft picks from pre-1992 - either Detroit's or another team's

Coffey, Shanahan, Lidstrom,

And they did a great job mining middle & late round picks from Europe

One side is loaded with top 5 overall pics, the other has been drafting near the bottom of the first round (or not at all)

One built through the draft, the other via trades and Free agency

Both did it right
