John M. Gurtler Jr., the public address announcer for the Buffalo Bills and voice of the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team, was arrested early Sunday along with his wife and teenage son after they allegedly hosted a large underage post-prom party at the family's Orchard Park home, Orchard Park police reported late Monday.

Gurtler and his wife, Mary, both 54, as well as 18-year-old John M. Gurtler III, were arrested at their Orchard Terrace home about 2 a.m. and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child. They are accused of providing alcohol to people less than 21 years old.

The charge is a misdemeanor that upon conviction can carry a sentence of up to a year in jail.

The Gurtlers were allegedly found to be hosting a party attended by as many as 80 teenagers. Officers reported observing several kegs of beer, as well as more than 150 open containers of alcoholic beverages at the scene. Numerous unopened containers were seized as evidence, police said.

When will it end?!?

Gurtler has been guilty of stealing money from the Bills for years...he sucks as an announcer. The guy makes too many mistakes per game.

How do you think you're NOT getting busted when you're a minor celebrity with 80 drunk teenagers milling around your McMansion?

We had a similar situation here, and it occurred about one week after a teen was killed DUI after attending one of these.
With that story still in the headlines, the parents provided alcohol at this party.

Though nothing happened, the parents got 27 months each.
This is regarded as very serious stuff in some places.

I still don't see the point of having a legal drinking age of 21. Stupid-ass law.

Over here you have to be 18 years old to be served a drink, or have a drink in a bar. In your own home a parent can give a kid as young as five an alcoholic drink, and this also applies in a restaurant or beer garden where food is being served. Though there is a clause of parental responsibility whereby a child cannot be served sufficient alcohol to cause intoxication, which pretty much translates as half a pint for a 5 year old.

In most states, it is legal to serve your own under age children alcohol.

And it should be.

Seriously, how stupid can you be to have a party and let teenagers who aren't even your own kids drink?!

What is the penalty over there if your 17 year old goes out and drinks a dozen beer, jumps in his size of montana SUV and kills a couple of people in an accident?

And growing up it was more taboo to drink coffee than it was beer.

In all honesty they were probably hosting this party to keep tabs on the children. You know kids are going to party and drink on prom night. Why not keep them all in one spot. My friends parents did the same thing for us back in the day. We all brought tents etc and had to leave our keys at the door.

Your 17-year old gets tried as an adult and goes to FMITA jail.

And most 17 year olds wouldn't have cars like that here because the insurance would be crippling.

This is shocking, and despite what some of you guys are saying; overblown (at least in ways).

First, regarding Gurtler's abilities as an announcer. No comment. I don't really have much to say about it. There are better announcers, there are worse.
But let me say this. I both know and have worked with John Gurtler, and I also know his family. We worked together on a magazine before and I must admit this (I know it has nothing to do with the issue), He's actually one of the very best writers I've ever worked with. He wrote a weekly column called "Gurt's Gossip" and it was as well written and insightful as anyone I've ever worked with. He was really that good. When I would pick up the publication each week that would be the first peice I'd read, even before I'd see how my own stuff turned out.

And as far as the arrest. I can tell you with CERTAINTY it is a case of bad judgement, but with the right intention. They hosted the big post-prom party at their house so that the kids would be accounted for and safe at one house. Kids will be kids on prom night, and if they are going to drink anyway (and they would find a way regardless) they figured it was safer to have them all at once place that was safe. What wasn't reported is that anybody driving had their keys taken from them upon arrival. And arrangements were made in advance for cabs and/or parents to pick up their children when it was time to go.

Why you certainly can't condone bad judgement and I'm sure they'll receive some penalty; I want it made clear that the Gurtler's hosted the party to keep dozens of kids from driving and being all over the place since they were going to party post-prom anyway like most people. The family has been good citizens in the Orchard Park community and I'm sure they'll get little more than a fine and hopefully a lesson learned. I can vouch for John Gurtler personally, as he is my nephew's godfather. He's a really good guy.

I've had a very bad taste for Gurtler ever since he was a Sabres announcer (and their top PR guy). His promotional demeanor was embarrassing. I'll never forget one time he put on a skit in which he played a cheesy infomercial host who "sold" items with such names as Benoit Hoagies. Such a performance was more ironic than entertaining; he is what he made fun of. He was the Vince McMahon of hockey.

The insurance company pays out, which is WHY the motor insurance for anyone under 25 is completely ridiculous.

now, combine that with our litigious society...an atmosphere where it is encouraged to get so blasted that you can't stand and vehicles as big as houses that are driven for huge distances and you get why parents want a drinking age of 18/21.

Just because someone's a good guy doesn't mean they are above doing dumb things....and it also doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished for doing those dumb things.

Pat, do you really think JG called 80 teenagers' parents and told them there would be alcohol served at his house?

And if he didn't, do you really think it's ok for him (or anyone) to make the call that it's ok for someone else's underage kid to drink at his house?

(For the record, I heard he's a great guy, too. But, again, that doesn't make it any more acceptable.....or legal).
