The deal
-three years with an option for two more years at Buffalo’s discretion.
-Deal includes the Sabres providing all on-ice talent, which includes veterans as well as coaching staff and equipment and athletic training staff.
“For the most part two-thirds of our players have been drafted and developed by our scouting and coaching staff, it’s that combination with having quality veterans,” said Sabres GM Darcy Regier.
It’s expected that current Americans head coach Randy Cunneyworth will become the new head coach for the Pirates pending he isn’t hired for one of the vacant NHL head coaching or assistant coaching jobs.
“The job is open for Randy and the only thing that would step in front of that or cause any type of change would be if Randy got a job in the National Hockey League,” said Regier. “Pending Randy going to the National Hockey League, Randy will be here.”

“In Rochester, for a lot of reasons we were put into a position where we were sharing a franchise with another team,” said Sabres Managing Partner Larry Quinn. “We didn’t like that arrangement and quite frankly, it’s what led us to the meeting with Brian (Petrovek) and Lyman (Bullard), which turned out to be a great benefit for us.
“We couldn’t sign veteran players, we couldn’t even bring players – we are bring (to Portland) – that we might have brought in a year earlier so we were kind of standing on one foot,” he said. “We made it known that it was not the situation we wanted and found ourselves every June without options. So what we did this fall was said we’re going to make a decision on November 1; if we can’t have the situation we want, we’re going to move on.”
