When jackasses in suits with too much money argue, everyone loses.

Buffalo loses a great marketing opportunity in nearby Rochester. Rochester loses a nearby market for their young guys who get called up. Both teams lose the ability to move players with a 45 minute drive up the Thruway and will spend more money in the long run. Rochester also loses their coach and an organization that has brought a lot of talent through the franchise.

What a nightmare. The Portland deal is only 3 years, so hopefully they can revisit this soon.

BENEFITS OF SOLE AFFILIATION

By pairing up with the Portland Pirates, the Buffalo Sabres have established sole affiliation with their American Hockey League counterpart.

Holding exclusive rights to their minor-league team for the first time since the 2004-05 season - when the Florida Panthers joined Buffalo in a dual affiliation with the Rochester Americans – Buffalo will again be able to have total control over the method in which their prospects are developed.

“It’s something we’ve gotten away from over the last couple years in Rochester,” Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier said. “The importance of [the sole affiliation] is to provide the same culture for all the players there, the same learning environment [and we have] the coaching staff, the players connected to us.”

In addition the Sabres have the luxury of surrounding those young players with the right veteran leadership.

In the past, journeymen like Chris Taylor and Jason Botterill guided the youngsters along the road to the NHL. Life lessons wouldn’t always be taught at the rink.

“Veterans can be an extension in a lot of ways of the coaching staff in that regard,” Regier said. “The support off the ice is, I think, every bit as important [as the support on the ice]. It revolves around helping them understand what it is to be a pro, what it takes and the things that you have to do.”

The stockpiling of talent began months ago in preparation for Tuesday’s announcement.

With an abundance of new players agreeing to terms with the Sabres- including Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy, Dennis Persson, Felix Schutz, Jhonas Enroth and Chris Butler- leadership will be crucial in continuing their growth.

But almost as important, so will roster stability.

“When you have two organizations providing the players to one development team, things become difficult from the standpoint of positional play. You can have too many defenseman, too many centermen, you can have not enough wingers,” Regier said. “You can have a situation where it’s difficult to decide between two goaltenders, one from each organization… It puts a lot of strain on the coaching staff, it puts a strain on the development process.

Good post! This whole ending of one of the longest affiliations is bad for both organizations. It's a lose-lose and it's mainly because two pieces of ****s with big egos couldn't get along. I'm glad it's 3-years too, because I don't see how both teams can't work things out....

Buffalo can blame themselves for the dual affiliation. They are the ones who said that they couldn't supply all the players to Rochester. They also said that they would not supply the veteran players. Quit listening to Larry Quinn, he's a ****ing douchebag and the sole reason why the two teams couldn't get along. Although Steve Donner didn't help much. However, Steve Donner is gone...he's not the controlling owner anymore. So maybe in 3 years, they will be able to work things out.

That is not true at all.

Quinn is not the sole reason and the Amerks money woes and debt were by far the biggest cause. Galisano tried to buy the Amerks, but Donner said no. There is not many times I'll defend Quinn the Douche, but this is one.

Golisano tried to buy the Amerks for dirt cheap, that's why Donner said no. Golisano was not willing to supply the Amerks with veterans and didn't have much in the farm. So Donner came up with the dual affiliation. But the truth is, both guys wanted to get out of it. They just couldn't come up with a new single affiliation, because Golisano, specifically douchebag Quinn and Donner both hate eachother and didn't want to try to patch their relationship. They just wanted to buy the team and that's it. But Donner kept saying no.

-three years with an option for two more years at Buffalo’s discretion.
