Focusing on sack plus/minus would be a huge addition for Bills

It’s understood that plus/minus refers to turnover margin, just as it’s accepted that a high or low total is a usually accurate indicator of triumph or failure, respectively. But there’s another positive/negative tally that is nearly as telling: the number of sacks a defense accumulates subtracted from the total the offense concedes. In this category, the Bills finished last year right where expected in the mediocre range, and concentrating on creating a favorably wide gap should be a top concern this season, at least for one side of the ball.

The disparity from team to team is telling. Contrast the New York franchises: The Super Bowl champion Giants finished second overall with a plus-25 margin, bringing down opposing quarterbacks 53 times with their ferocious interior blitz while surrendering only 28. Maybe that should have told observers something before the playoffs. Meanwhile, Super Bowl III winner the Jets were minus-24; outsiders could look at this stat for both and correctly surmise the state of each squad without knowing last season’s records or even having seen a single 2007 game...........
