From high NFL draft pick to Arena League

(April 21, 2003 4:56 p.m. EDT) - Shante Carver and Marcus Nash were picked in the first round of the NFL draft, own Super Bowl rings, and now are in the Arena Football League.

Travis McGriff and Cory Fleming were third-round selections by top teams, then found their way to the indoor league after truncated NFL careers.

All say the AFL is not a bad place to be, even with five-figure salaries, compared with the NFL's average of $1.25 million. They figure they could offer advice to players who might enter the NFL to much fanfare during next weekend's draft, then fade away.

"I am enjoying myself - there's not as much pressure," says Carver, the Cowboys' first-round choice (23rd overall) in 1994. He was the first player chosen in Dallas' post-Jimmy Johnson era, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones making the pick.
