The Penguins found out yesterday that they'll be able to spend $56.7 million on players during the coming season.

They also learned that they still haven't offered defenseman Brooks Orpik enough of that money to convince him to stay.

Orpik, poised to enter unrestricted free agency Tuesday, rejected a contract proposal from the Penguins yesterday. While its details were not immediately known, Orpik is expected to command a salary of well over $3 million if he hits the open market.

His agent, Lewis Gross, confirmed that Orpik did not accept the Penguins' offer, but declined to say whether he is optimistic an agreement can be reached before Tuesday.

"We did receive an offer, which we turned down," Gross said. "But we're still talking."

Penguins general manager Ray Shero steadfastly has refused to comment on most matters relating to free agency.

Orpik is one of the 12 players who finished the 2007-08 season on the Penguins' major league roster who will qualify for unrestricted free agency in a few days.

I would absolutely LOVE to have this guy but I don't want to get myself hyped up. I just pray that the Sabres get this done.

There is no way Orpik gets 6 mil a season.

with all that money out there?? Rumors are he turned down $3mil a year to stay in Pitts. I will be surprised if he doesn't get between $4.5 and $6 mil...my betting is about $5 mil a year.

I would think anymore than 4.5 is overpaid, and 4.5 is still a little overpaid IMO. As much as I want the guy in Buffalo, I'll be pissed if they pay that much to get him.

I forget who the analyst was on WGR last week - might have been Jim Kelley. He was saying that there was so much money added to the cap and so few players in FA that those that are quality will be well over paid.

That's the NHL now. You have to pay a ridiculous contract if you want to get a good player in FA. :ill:

I'll be upset if he's getting more than $5 million, but I'll live with it when i see him on the ice and be the force on the blue line that they have been missing. :D

He isn't worth that much money, period. How could you be happy knowing that they will be strapped in the coming seasons. It isn't just ok to over pay someone because they have that need. That doesn't make sense in my book.

if you want to compete for some of the better players in FA and want to build your team with talented players, you are going to have to overpay a bit. Like with Drury and Briere. Sure they would have gotten crazy contracts, but either of them would have helped the team last year and would have been worth the money.

I don't think just because other teams overpay that it's ok for the Sabres to overpay. That is the one thing I constantly fight with people about when they argue about letting McKee go. I would've liked to see him stay but not at that price tag.
