Bigger Edwards and a better receiver could mean longer throws

Low passing game gains are like the “check engine” light: You know something’s wrong, but there could be a hundred reasons why. The fact that Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards’ weak showing in the category last year has become a hot issue is unsurprising, and there are as many suggested remedies as there are mechanics. While many think factors such a new offensive coordinator and more time jelling with the team’s star receiver will help, getting in better shape along with a precocious new catcher might do more in practice than any concept could.

While managing games is an important skill he’s already displayed, Edwards frankly also needs to manage to put more ground under his throws. His noticeable tendency to lean on shorter tosses limited him during his rookie season, but it’s a factor that’s correctable and more importantly actually being addressed. Namely, he’s reportedly improving his physical capabilities; at the same time, the team’s front office gave him a gift at wide receiver, which paired together are encouraging developments that could enable the passer to progress in what was a tough area for him.

The passing advances with the rookie under center would have been impressive - by rushing standards. Edwards averaged a meager 6.1 yards gained per attempt; that put him at a rather unfortunate 31st in the league for qualifying passers. It’s not a fair comparison for anyone, but Tom Brady led the league with 8.3 yards for every pass he threw.............

I think that Trent is going to surprise a lot of his critics this year - especially with the vertical passing game.

I don't expect him to air it out downfield 10+ times a game, and I don't want him to do that. What I expect is a QB that is going to improve significantly in the intermediate passing game, which will open up the big plays downfield.

I also expect the play action passing game to produce a lot of big plays as well.

Actually, it would have to do with arm speed. Muscle mass doesn't always translate to arm speed. Especially considering a football isn't too heavy.

TE needs to maximize his throwing capacity by enhancing a small portion of his throwing arm to conduct enough inertia to the projectile, meaning the football accurately enough for it to arrive to it's intended target of preconceived selection. Nerd alert! LOL!
