We knew at least one forward was going to move out of the Bernier, Max, Kotalik, and Mac group.

I would guess one more would be go too.

I'm pretty happy with what we got in return.

I can see us packaging Max and Kotalik for a D-man or two.

I didn't see that coming, I thought he'd be given a chance in Buffalo. So we lose a young player and get draft picks, what about guys that can play now? Hopefully there's something happening behind the scenes.

There must be. I think we're making room for a decent winger in a max trade (maybe one of these picks will be included) and hopefully we sign at least one d-man.

pittsburgh and detroit are out improving parts of their teams...and the were in the FINALS.

i HAAAAAAAAAAAATE the arrogance of this front office..thinking that we're..dare i say, PATRIOT -esque and that we have the best possible roster.....

this team has gotten WORSE since FA started. period.

didnt even re sign 2 of our starters from our ****ty defense last year...where does that leave us???

Gee, and I thought I hated him

On the list of the FO's blunders, this is pretty low, if at all. I won't miss him.

Can we trade Darcy for the late night shift manager at McDonalds? I think he could make some better deals to improve this team.

Stallion, we understand your displeasure, but please tone down the language a notch. I'd rather not have to issue points for something so silly.

It's all Quinn. Regier is not the problem. It starts from the top and that includes Gollys cheap ass.

I think the Canucks were going to offer him an offer sheet and Reiger was not going to match it. Maybe Gillis tipped his hat and they came up with this deal instead?

reported on another board (in other words, total speculation) that Vancouver was going to offer sheet him, but Darcy was given the option of a trade

I think the Sabres are going to throw an offersheet at the Oilers. I bet regier is still sour of the Vanek offersheet.

SO you guys know.
This trade was done on Wednesday, but not announced until today (PR reasons)

Anybody read the paper and see Regier this morning talk "favorably" about Max?

Seriously, I wasn't thrilled with Bernier or Kalinin so I'm not pissed to see them go.

But at the same time, who's going to replace them?

It's the same old story and just like the Bills- they get rid of guys who aren't working, which is step 1. But then they fail at step 2- which is replacing them with more talented players.

Replace Bernier?? A pylon could replace him. He scored three goals. Two in his first game during a blowout and the third one off his ass.

then sign a pylon.

So far we've lost two players- granted, two useless players- and added no one. Who's going to fill their slots on the roster?

This team is loaded with future potential maybes. The loss of Bernier is inconsequential. Plus they just got Rivet to help out the defense.

i liked bernier a lot, i really did

but we do have a huge logjam at forward and we're thin on defense.

Bernier was slow and lazy. There's a reason why San Jose traded him to us and there's a reason why we shipped him right back to the west coast.

You guys are really too much. Bernier outside of his first game with the Sabres showed NOTHING. We got a 2nd and 3rd rounder for him. Whats the problem with that? We have a ton of forwards. We need to clear room.

However, a big threat of a Group II offer was taken off the table yesterday when the Canucks acquired Steve Bernier for draft picks from the Sabres. Vancouver GM Mike Gillis has been aggressive on the free-agent market (he offered Mats Sundin $20 million over two years) and the talk is he may have threatened Sabres GM Darcy Regier with an offer sheet.

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Ottawa/2008/07/05/6074671-sun.html

I'm thinking Darcy must have told Gillis they would match the offer. Why else would they through in a 2nd rounder.

What would have the Sabres got if Buffalo didn't match the offer sheet?

One week after the Vancouver Canucks signed restricted free agent forward David Backes to an offer sheet, the St. Louis Blues have struck back.

The Blues signed Group II free agent forward Steve Bernier to an offer sheet worth $2.5 million for next season, which the Canucks have seven days to match. If they don't, Vancouver receives St. Louis' second round draft choice in 2009...
