The Buffalo Sabres acquired veteran defenseman Craig Rivet from the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

The Sharks sent the 33-year-old veteran and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 Entry Draft to the Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 Drafts.

Rivet will help the Sabres replace Dmitri Kalinin, who signed with the New York Rangers on Thursday.

In 2007-08, Rivet scored five goals and 30 assists in 74 regular season games. The assists and 35 points were career highs. He also had six assists in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Rivet was originally selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the 68th pick of the 1992 Entry Draft. Rivet was traded to San Jose on Feb. 25, 2007 along with a fifth-round pick in 2008 in exchange for defenseman Josh Gorges and a 2007 first-round pick.

For his career, Rivet has scored 45 goals and 149 assists in 744 regular-season games.

It marked the second trade of the day for the Sabres, who earlier swapped restricted free agent forward Steve Bernier to the Vancouver Canucks for a pair of draft picks.

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Craig Rivet and the San Jose Sharks’ seventh round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for the Sabres’ second round picks in both 2009 and 2010.

Rivet (9/13/74, 6’2”, 210 lbs) appeared in 74 games with San Jose last season, picking up 35 points (5+35) and 104 penalty minutes. In 13 postseason games, he collected six assists (0+6). Rivet was an assistant captain last year with the Sharks.

“We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster,” said Regier. “He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience.”

The North Bay, Ontario native has appeared in 744 NHL games and has amassed 194 points on 45 goals and 149 assists (45+14). Rivet played parts of 12 seasons in Montreal before a trade to San Jose during the 2006-2007 season. Rivet was the Canadiens’ third-round choice (68th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

I'm thinking maybe the Sabres wanted Rivet all along. When the Sabres traded Campbell to the Sharks but the Sharks didn't want to give Rivet up so the Sharks gave the Sabres Bernier and their first round pick instead. But Darcy wasn't a happy camper that day when the Sabres got Bernier so what does he do he goes out and trades for him.

Well he's more productive than the fan coveted Brooks Orpik, plus he brings good leadership and cojones to this team.

Rivet is exactly the type of player we need. An established veteran dman, yet he isn't too old. He's known as a leader and that's something else we're lacking. We're getting him at a decent price and he'll easily replace and surpass Kalinin.

That being said, I wouldn't have my feelings hurt if the Sabres grabbed another able body in the Defense.

So the Sabres lose their extra 2nd in 2010, but gain a 3rd, get rid of a forward and get a tough Dman with experience and leadership. GO DARCY!!!

Interesting statement by Laraque about size on a team refering to Montreal.

The Montreal native said he had his way on the ice last season when his Pittsburgh Penguins played against Montreal, a team loaded with smaller, skilled forwards who tried to get by without an enforcer and rely on what coach Guy Carbonneau called "team toughness."

"I elbowed (Canadiens defenceman) Francis Bouillon and no one did anything about it," Laraque said on a conference call from his home in Edmonton. "When you're a heavyweight and you play a team that doesn't have one, you can run around.

Hope Rivet is ready willing and able.

who knows...maybe the Rivet deal was discussed at last years trade deadline but the Sharks wanted to keep him for a "run".

you hit it right the nail right on the head,

Darcy's press conf. after the Sabres traded for Rivet,

The Sabres first choice in the Campbell deal wasn't Bernier it was Rivet. The Sharks asked Darcy what he wanted for Campbell he told them a 1st (rounder) and a player or prospect. Darcy originaly wanted Rivet but the Sharks didn't want to give him up because the Sharks were gearing up for a playoffs. So Darcy took Bernier instead.

If that is actually true, Darcy and the Sharks GM could've had something worked out once the off-season came. I don't know how realistic that is but it goes to show that sometimes there are things that go on that we don't know about.
