    Whitner guarantees playoffs

When asked if he expects the Bills to make the playoffs, Whitner makes it clear how serious he is. "Do I expect us to make the playoffs?" he says. "I'm guaranteeing it."

      "Leodis isn't a big talker--he's a doer," says Whitner.
"Do I expect us to make the playoffs?" he says. "I'm guaranteeing it."
We shall find out if you're the talker Donte.

Shortly after the Bills open training camp in late July, they will elect team captains for next season. Here's a suggestion for the Bills: Elect Whitner as a captain. Obviously, he is already acting like one.
Yeah, giving our opponents bulletin board fodder in JULY is really acting like a captain....

Please just STFU with the guarantees.

it's nice to see something like this though. it actually puts them under some pressure. it adds a layer of accountability.

True, it may turn out to just be talk, but if whitner has the team's attention as the leader he's trying to be, every player will have that hovering over their head.

          Hopefully its a good sign.

Op, i can't believe your against it.

i think its more detrimental to say, "well, guys we never win, so lets go out there and try real good and there will be popsicles after the game."

Say what you want, then go out and get it.

The risk is that he's just talking, but i have a sense that whitner is a fairly respected player since he stayed healthy, was drafted high, and has played well under the circumstances.

i like to have a team with some swagger going in.

I like the confidence, but I hate the guarantees.

If it works out for us, Donte will look like Joe Namath.
If it doesn't, he'll look like Jon Kitna.

                  Nothing is guaranteed in sports.

When I come in here and complain about how bad this team is, I get a lot of people going "well then why even bother playing the game if we can't win?"

Well, the same logic goes the other way- if the playoffs are guaranteed for us, why bother playing the season? Just seed the teams on paper and start the playoffs next week.

It's one thing for a player to believe his team is going to make the playoffs and he's going to help do it. It's another thing to publicly guarantee playoffs.

Think of how we'd be reacting right now if the Jets safety said the exact same thing.

I doubt at the end of the season anybody will even remember this guarantee. I can only imagine that amount of players saying one thing or another in July before TC even starts.

its about time someone on this team actually has some balls and some confidence
The last time the Bills made the playoffs was 1999.

If someone on the Jets or Dolphins guaranteed playoffs this early, people here would be pissed and I guarantee you wouldn't call that an overreaction.

It's never a good idea to motivate opponents, and giving a guarantee leads to some of the most embarrassing moments in sports (remember Steelers/Patriots last year?).

The season's still 2 months away and the guy's already talking smack. It's arrogant and irritating, not to mention completely illogical given how this team has performed recently.
